About the Author
R. Jennifer Cavalieri, BSN, RN, CCRC, CCRP, is the Nurse Coordinator of Clinical Research Projects in Infectious Diseases section at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and she has been a research nurse for more than 25 years. Her experience includes coordinating clinical research trials sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry, federal agencies, and investigator-initiated trials. She has also worked as a dedicated subject recruiter and manager of a clinical trials office.

Mark E. Rupp, MD, is Professor and Chief of Infectious Diseases and Medical Director of the Department of Infection Control and Epidemiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His research experience includes leading numerous infectious disease bench and clinical trials as the Principal Investigator. Dr. Rupp is Past President of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He was the Medical Director for a hospital-based clinical trials office and has served as an advisor for the CDC, FDA, NIH, and VA.

Truly useful material.

This book is a must to have by anyone involved in clinical trials, specially coordinators. It is simplified and hands on resource. I commend the authors for spending their time and energy not just to make money but provinging readers useful material!

Must-have-if-you-do-clinical-research

As a NIH funded researcher, I used this book to guide me the entire research project. Not like other research manual I read in the past, this book shows step by step approaches in conducting clinical research, practical strategies, rule and regulations, as well as templates you can use without reinvent the wheel. This book saved me a lot of time during program planning period. I developed 1002 page project manual based on this book. Must have!!

This book is a must have for those clinical research coordinators who are just starting research as well as those who have been conducting research for awhile. It is written by someone who is in the trenches every day. Someone who is a natural teacher. The business of clinical trial research is decidedly not simple. Jen and Dr. Rupp are veterans of research and know what it takes to be successful. Jen is naturally organized. She has put together a book for many of us who don't have the time or inclination on how to put all the pieces together. The information is provided in such a way that it makes clinical research look simple, which it is not.

About the Author

Paul Daugherty has been a sports columnist for the Cincinnati Enquirer since 1994. He has covered nearly every major American sporting event, as well as five Summer Olympic Games. A Triumph of the Human Spirit!

One of the things that truly touch my soul these days is the triumph of the human spirit. I am finding that as I have become an "OG" (which followers of Paul's column will know means an "old guy"), watching or even hearing about people accomplishing things that others, or perhaps they themselves, thought highly unlikely or even impossible, brings tears to my eyes while lifting me up at the same time. It can be as simple as a victory in an athletic event, or someone lending a helping hand to a complete stranger. Paul Daugherty's latest book, An Uncomplicated Life: A Fathers Memoir of His Exceptional Daughter, provides so many of those moments that define the joy of life itself. The story is not without moments of sadness, frustration, and even of anger, but the overall feelings that it left me with were joy, pride and hope!

I have a daughter. She does not have Down Syndrome as does Paul's daughter Jillian, in fact she does not have a disability of any kind. However, I still related to a number of things such as the, "Oh my god, my little girl is growing up and doesn't need me anymore" moments. I have also felt the sadness at the times when my daughter would come home after sitting alone at lunch or feeling like she had no friends. My daughter has also been told that there were certain things in her life for which she would not be well suited (like basketball at 5'4" and about 115 lbs.-she too proved them wrong buy the way!). My point being that even if you don't have a child with a disability, you will relate to so much of this book. I also believe that even if you don't have children, Jillian's story will provide you with so many of the same special moments that it did me. It is that good. It is that inspiring.

For me there are really two stories running concurrently in this book. The first is Paul and Kerry's struggle with and the ultimate acceptance of Jillian's disability and what it would mean for their lives. What do you do when your whole life suddenly has been turned upside down? Why did this happen to you? We often wonder in life "What did I do to deserve this?" "Why did God do this to me?". While it was impossible at the time, Paul, Kerry and their son Kelly, years later came to understand that maybe God did this for them, that Jillian was their gift to help them (and anyone who was to become a part of Jillian's life), learn what life was really about.

Most of us have so many complications in our lives, and more often than not those complications are self-inflicted. Work, home-life, other inter-personal relationships and our "goals" in life, all come with strings attached, conditions if you will. Typically these complications are a result of fear-fear of love not returned, fear of losing something and fear that we are not good enough. I think that the Daugherty family was given a gift. They were blessed with a child who interacts without strings, one who loves unconditionally and who sees the good in everything and everyone - even today as a fully grown, mature and absolutely lovely young lady. Jillian's life more full of love than fear. Most of us, I suspect, cannot say the same.

This is a story of Paul and Kerry and their tireless effort to urge the people who came in contact with Jillian, not to just look at her, but to see her, Jillian, as an individual capable of all the same feelings and emotions as the rest of us. They fought hard to make certain that those close to Jillian helped her to expect that she could achieve the many of the things that any other child could achieve. They fought almost daily so that the Loveland City School System didn't just accept the systematic limitations prescribed for those with cognitive disabilities and file them away, but that they teach Jillian along with all the other children, in the same classrooms, to learn, to push herself and to expect more of herself than did the majority of the world around her.

But this is also the story of Jillian, Jillian The Magnificent (JTM) as Paul often refers to her in his columns in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Jillian charged into this world, in a hurry and full of opinions and with her eyes looking at and seemingly taking in everything around her. Perhaps that was a sign, or should have been, that this extraordinary little girl was ready to jump in head first to all the world had to offer. Jillian learned to do most everything that the other children did, much of the time it just took longer, sometimes a lot longer.

But Paul and Kerry persevered. There were times when they had no more to give, when they wondered if maybe the system was right about Jillian. But then would come that small victory, that triumph and the joyful look on Jillian’s angelic face, that reinforced what they had hoped – that Jillian could be more, that she could achieve more than the world around her believed possible.

Jillian’s unrelenting determination and her vibrant spirit, made those long days (and evenings) studying worth it. Her determination helped fuel theirs. Jillian would ride a bicycle, she would graduate high school and she would go to college. And Jillian would find love too, with her “favorite boy”, Ryan. They are to be married later this month. I bet there won’t be a dry eye in the house. I bet Jillian herself will be “happy-crying”.

It becomes clear throughout the book that Jillian brings out the best (sometimes the worst) in those around her. People see in her many of the things in her that they would like to see in themselves –innocence, trust, kindness, happiness and spontaneous bursts of laughter and joy. Whether by circumstance or not, Jillian’s life is a simple one. It is filled with small victories every day. Jillian’s is truly is an uncomplicated life. But it is also one that is enriching to her and to so many of people around her.

Throughout this book, Jillian, along with Paul, Kerry and Kelly has given me more faith in people and many more examples of the triumph of the human spirit. Thank you Paul, for sharing that experience with me.

Do yourself a favor. Read this book. I suspect you will get many of the same rewards from doing so as I have!

Tough Guy Down

I once edited a collection of Paul Daugherty’s columns in which I wrote that 'Daugherty is a tough guy; his aggressively democratic-with-a-small-d pieces have a no-nonsense, blue-collar sensibility, spiked with a streak of irreverence.' That, of course, is what brings in his many fans (and the occasional death threat). But if you want to see the OTHER guy behind The Guy, read his new book, 'An Uncomplicated Life,' the story of a father (and mother) raising a child with Down Syndrome. Here, he’s Tough Guy Down, relating, in his usual straightforward manner, family life with Jillian, the little dynamo who’s the book’s heroine. Doc always had the ear of a good reporter, and so his story deals with the medical issues, as well as the paradox of an education policy that says kids with disabilities must be educated while not providing the funding—and personnel—to do so. But the show here is the wit and ebullience of Jillian, who says to Paul as she’s being disciplined, 'You wanna piece of me, Daddy-o?' Or Jillian dialing 911 for an emergency, which is that’s she’s out of chocolate milk. Paul’s always been one of the best sportswriters in the country, but Jillian is his—and Kerry’s—best work. Read the book.

Amazing Read!

I first saw the authors letter to his daughter on her wedding day on social media and thought, "wow what a wonderful father!" I then saw that he wrote a book about his exceptional daughter and I thought, "if this is anything like his letter I'm sure I will love it." Paul did not disappoint!

You go through this family's journey and struggle for the rights that every child has but for some reason was a fight for their dear Jillian. I feel as though I know them all so well since reading this book. I laughed, cried, love and hated through this whole story! It was the greatest journey I have ever been on and I will be reading it again! My only negative thing about the book was it ended:-( I would so love to read more of this amazing family and my new favorite young woman, Jillian!

Since reading this book I have posted about it on social media and I even accosted people in Barnes and Noble telling them all about this amazing book and that their life is not complete until they read it!

To say I am a big fan is an understatement. I would easily give it 100 stars if I could. Thank you for sharing your story.

About the Author
Brian Ashcraft is a senior contributing editor for the video-game site Kotaku. Ashcraft was previously a contributing editor at Wired magazine; his work has also appeared in Popular Science, the Guardian, the Japan Times, and the design journal Metropolis, as well as numerous other publications worldwide. He is the author of Arcade Mania! and Japanese Schoolgirl Confidential. Originally from Texas, he has called Osaka home for well over a decade.

Hori Benny was born in Minneapolis and moved to Japan in 2002. Two years later he settled in Osaka and began a tattoo apprenticeship at Chopstick Tattoo. In 2014 he formed his own studio, Invasion Club, near Osaka's otaku cultural center in Nipponbashi. He does custom work in a variety of genres.

Trying to put all the details or history of tattooing in Japan into a book is basically impossible. Instead you are going to be able to get a glimpse at quite a few styles and aspects of the art as it exists in Japan. I think the stand out point for this book would be the interviews. Hori Benny is an Osaka staple in the tattooing community and without him none of these interviews would've been able to happen (let alone all in one spot!).

It doesn't over-romanticize Japan, like many books do, but rather provides a comprehensive and stimulating exploration of Japanese tattoo culture, influencing factors and history. Awesome artwork as one would expect from something of this calibre.

In his fourth book, Japanese Tattoos: History * Culture * Design, Brian Ashcraft teams up with Osaka artist Hori Benny to tackle a traditionally dense subject and make it accessible to everyone. While there are other books covering the subject, this is easily the most approachable.

The book is available in digital and paperback formats; for the purposes of this view, I relied mostly on my paperback copy. That said, one advantage of the digital version is that you can zoom in on the photos. However, this doesn't take away from the paperback version, which is printed in full colour on good quality paper.

Inside, the text is immediately engaging. The introduction is extensive, providing background on the history and culture of tattoos, and how the latter has changed. This makes a solid foundation for first chapter, which covers kanji tattoos and takes the reader much further back than they might expect! Did you know that before being used for punishment, tattoos could denote rank, or social status? That they were sometimes used to mark pledges, or to identify fallen warriors? Or maybe you're looking to get a kanji tattoo, yourself--advice on that can be found here, too.

The next three chapters cover other designs and motifs common to the artform. Every example is provided with an in-depth explanation of its significance and history, complete with pictorial examples. Often, idiosyncrasies of language that might be lost on a non-native speaker are brought to light. Instead of dry exposition that would leave some simply skimming through the photos, you have passionate writing that seeks to share information written in such a fashion that you can't help but feel the authors want you to develop the same enthusiasm they already have.

The fifth chapter, The Full Bodysuit, is best described in its own introductory text: "The bodysuit is the fullest expression of irezumi." Once again, any preconceptions the reader might have are challenged, here. The different types of bodysuit are explored (yes, there are several!), their layouts and borders. When the entire body is being used as a canvas, everything has meaning.

The sixth and final chapter covers how tattoos and even the methods of tattooing have changed over time. As patterns and styles were passed down from master to apprentice, new designs have flourished along classic motifs, while still adhering to the rules of irezumi. Geek tattoos (also known as otatoo, a word coined by co-author Hori Benny) began to appear in the past few decades, while still reflecting the values and interests of modern life.

While not a section unto itself, I also appreciated the tattooist and client profiles scattered throughout the book. More than any other, this is an industry and artform that requires people. I think that's what makes this book so special. All of the parts come together to show that this is a living, storied art made possible by the lives dedicated to it. A Good Place To Start

I just purchased this book and it's great for a beginner [skincare crafter] like me. DIY recipes have always intrigued me, and overall this book is a good addition to my general DIY book collection. Tons of great choices for facial masks, bath concoctions, etc., however, I wish it'd have a few more recipes for facial and eye creams. The one and only eye recipe entitled "Eye Cream" is really not a cream at all, but a recipe made up of several oils. Same for the facial moisturizers on pages 28 and 29. While oils in skin care recipes are to be expected, I am not a fan of just oils. The Comfrey Infused Oil looks great, but it calls for fresh comfrey. I don't have access to fresh comfrey and it does not specify of dried can be substituted. I am assuming so, but it would have been nice for the author to state so. Another issue is when referring to other recipes within the book (as in the case of recipes within recipes), the author only provides the chapter, rather than the page. It's much faster to have the exact page than flipping through a chapter. Lastly, there is no Resource section. Still on the hunt for a better book. I have my eye on Shannon Buck's upcoming book, soon to be released.

Good book to fight stress or depression

I had a lot of fun with this book-enough to purchase after borrowing from the library. I hadn't made skin care products before and the recipes were easy enough to follow. Most of the recipes I made (and I made a lot of them) turned out and I have gone back to making more of the same one when I ran out rather than searching for a new recipe from a different source. There is enough variety with several recipes covering each area: scrubs, toners, moisturizers, hair care products. . I'm surprised there weren't any for making deodorant or toothpaste. There is a small section that explains the reason for choosing the specific ingredients which is always nice to know. There are quite a few different ingredients and I found myself hunting through health stores to find various ingredients. This was fun for me and helped with stress. I could see it driving someone crazy though. To complicate things, some of the recipes involve two steps. First you make an infusion and then when that is ready you incorporate it into the actual recipe. This turned out to be a whole lot of fun. I infused witch hazel (which I had never used before) with vanilla. Once I learned how to infuse I got busy and infused coconut oil with all the leftover tea that I had. Then that was used in the lip balm recipe (which is fantastic). This also inspired me to make my own extracts. The author touches briefly on skin care and blemishes emerging with cleansing. Perhaps more discussion regarding reactive healing would enhance this book. There was no guidance on making rose petal powder which is used in several recipes. I searched the net but didn't really find much so eventually I baked the petals and then ran them through the coffee grinder ( a must have). There is a scrub recipe that is fantastic-but It involves turmeric and turned my pale skin yellow-like can't scrub it off for two days yellow. Probably some skin tones benefit but it was horrid on mine. My tub was also dyed yellow and I had to use bleach to get it off. The scrub was so amazing I actually knowingly did it all over again. However if I were to make it I wouldn't use the turmeric ( yes it's great stuff but...). There is a pre tan scrub with citrus and my understanding is that sun exposure and citrus don't go together. Several recipes involve comphrey which is not readily found in my area. Research on it revealed some controversy although for skin care is supposed to be ok. All in all this is a great book for someone who is willing to search for ingredients. I supplemented the recipes with my essential oils and learned a few new things that I can do with the roses,lavender and herbs that grow in the yard. I also learned a whole lot about the various ingredients that I have never previously used and was inspired to move further into tj

It would have recieved 5 stars from me if all the recipes had been accurate. For example, the cocoa butter body butter said it would yield 8 ounces when it only yielded 4 ounces. That's a big difference when one is trying to figure in the costs. I ended up essentially paying double what I was anticipating to make that batch. I was extremely careful in my measuring and cooking so I know I followed the directions accurately. In the same recipe it says to add the essential oils twice in a row. Not a huge deal but sloppy editing is annoying to me. That being said, I've made two other recipes out of the book that turned out perfectly and were really quite good (the lip balm and whipped Shea body butter).

About the Author
S�ren Kierkegaard�(1813-55) was born in Copenhagen, the youngest of seven children. His childhood was unhappy, clouded by the religious fervour of his father, and the death of his mother, his sisters and two brothers. Educated at the School of Civic Virtue, he went on study theology, liberal arts and science at university, gaining a reputation for his academic brilliance and extravagant social life. He began to criticize Christianity, and in 1841 broke off his engagement to concentrate on his writing. Over the next ten years he produced a flood of works, in particular twelve major philosophical essays, many written under noms de plume. By the end of his life he had become an object of public ridicule, but he is now enjoying increasing acclaim.�

Alastair Hannay�was educated at the Edinburgh Academy, the University of Edinburgh and University College London. In 1961 he became a resident of Norway and is now Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oslo.

Amazing Read

This book is a must read in order to understand the very lifeblood of Kierkegaard's philosophy and existence!! Its powerful, very revealing of the character himself in ways that his published books don't portray as clearly. He is very open and definite in his philosophy here and completely reveals his heart and faith. Please get this book even though it may be a long read. It is so worth it. I love how deep Kierkegaard goes in his thinking and how real he is with himself and all of us. He is no thinker to tickle your ears but a master at pricking the very spirit and heart of a person and goes so deep and yet reveals the bigger picture in ways that almost no person has done before or after him. This is a great book to read to understand more fully who the man is and what he believes, which makes all his other works more lively, clear and captivating!!!

Great insight and wisdom along with wry humor and penetrating observations

In his short life Danish philosopher S�ren Kierkegaard (1814-1855) wrote over seven thousand pages of papers and journal entries, enough writing to fill an entire bookshelf. This Penguin collection organizes Kierkegaard's journals into eight major phases of the philosopher's life, from Kierkegaard's early 20s to the last years of his life before he collapsed on the street at age 43. There is great insight and wisdom here. There is also wry humor and penetrating observations on 19th century European society and the ever-present existential challenges of human experience . To give a small taste of what a reader will find in the 600+ pages of this book, below are several of Kierkegaard's pithy entries along with my very brief comments:

From the chapter: 1834-1836: THE FIRST JOURNAL ENTRIES
"People understand me so little that they fail even to understand my complaints that they do not understand me." ---------- Do you think you understand Kierkegaard? What do you think the Danish philosopher would think of your understanding?

"Damn and hell, I can abstract from everything but not from myself. I can't even forget myself when I sleep." ---------- With reflections (and curses) like this, it is no surprise Kierkegaard is considered the father of existentialism!

From the chapter: 1848-1849: THE WIDENING OF THE RIFF
"No wonder I am thought mad. All that supports my endeavor is what might recommend it in eternity but secularly gives it a bad name and deprives me of respect. I earn nothing from it, it is not my livelihood or my job. And I am alone in a little country - where nevertheless a thousand priests are paid into thinking they are Christians." ---------- A pointed observation about established religion if there ever was one. And quite a statement of how the general public views a philosopher and original thinker.

But his mind was so unbelievably sharp. Thus, young S�ren was given the nickname 'The Fork'. Fortunately for lovers of literary philosophy, SK was also given a natural gift to write!

PERSECUTION
"In our times persecution just doesn't exit - because Christendom has been made so lacking in character that really there is nothing to persecute." ---------- I recall a Kierkegaard quote where he observed the prime predictable fact of modern-day society is the abysmal lack of character. I have taken this quote as a challenge at every phase of my own life.

SOCRATES - THE OTHER
"Socrates always talked exclusively of food and drink - but really he was talking and thinking all the time of the infinite. The others are always talking, and in the loudest voices, about the infinite, but really they are talking and thinking all the time about food and drink." ---------- Two rhetorical questions: What is the prime topic of your conversation? What is the truth for which you are willing to live and die?

INTROVERSION
"We are warned against introversion; you might just as well warn against Christianity." ---------- You don't have to be a follower of the Christian faith to see how we all must retain the integrity of our inner life.

I do not read these journal entries the way I read a novel, from beginning to end; rather, I read and reread one entry at a time. There is enough literary philosophy contained in this book to keep me going until I'm at least a 100 years old.

As of of the most influential of Western philosophers, this anthology of selected papers by Kierkegaard is a nice way to wade through the sea of his writing without drowning. One certainly gets a good feel for his zeitgeist, including his views on politics, religion and life in general. Only for the scholarly.
