4.5 stars Who knew? David Linden educates and entertains in Touch: The Science of Hand, Heart, and Mind.

As an avid reader and music lover I’ve considered what life would be like deprived of either sense, truly gosh awful. But there are ways to deal with both and lead a full productive life. You can learn Braille and music can still be heard through vibrations. Sense of smell and taste are trickier as one affects the other. If you can’t smell natural gas you wouldn’t know if it were leaking. If you can’t smell coffee, it wouldn’t taste the same and the pleasure of good food would be lost. The loss of either would reduce many of life’s pleasures but both can be dealt with. Indeed, there are several medical reasons for olfactory loss that, with treatment, can return some or most of the sense of smell. Personally the sense of touch ranked low on my list of must have. I’d never actually contemplated how touch affects every aspect of life, mentally, physically, and emotionally. Touch was something I took for granted, ignored, and underestimated. Not any more.

• Remember the orphanage children in Romania? They suffered from a myriad of problems, across all spectrums, resulting from their rarely being held or touched due to understaffing.
• What about a neo-natal ICU ward for preemies that lowered the mortality rate from 70 % to 10% by using kangaroo care?
• Did you know that koalas and chimps have fingerprints eerily similar to humans? Some weasels and other mammals have fingerprints while others don’t?
• What if you couldn’t feel pain? People with this condition usually die young. Then there are those who experience random attacks of incredible pain but live full lives.
• The science of orgasm. Ha, it is more mental than physical. Although we experience orgasms as intrinsically pleasurable, they are really just a trick our brains are playing on us through simultaneous activity in many brain regions.

If, like me, you aren’t scientifically inclined, please don’t let that put you off. David Linden does a superlative job of conveying the complex yet fascinating subject of touch to lay people via stories (often humorous), examples, pictures, graphs, and charts.
TOUCH: THE SCIENCE OF HAND, HEART, AND MIND educates through entertaining readers. From vampire bats and pit vipers to bad hand jobs and beyond, you’ll be amazed at what you never knew about the seemingly simple act of a touch. I certainly was.

An approachable and enjoyable look at how we are all affected by touch. It is filled with interesting and funny anecdotes that made this heady subject relatable. I really liked the book.

Touch is More Important Than We Know!

Touch quite clearly is associated with almost every experience of a human being. This book begins by correlating the times a person says “I feel” followed by an emotional adjective to indicate that the tactile sense is wired neurologically to not only our brain but also our emotions. The author then explores the difference between what an affectionate or friendly touch can mean to an encounter and how the recipient of such a touch interprets the future of such a relationship, whether it be in business, education, or elsewhere.
The author then moves into a series of complex experiments that have to do with tactile sense of different experiences, even moving into the field of DNA related to touch, how pain receptors operate to connect with the emotions, and an actual sharing of the connection with the euphorically experienced orgasm which is obviously related to touch. In all of this, however, it is even more phenomenal how few individuals actually realize that most of their experiences are related to the tactile sense. When asked if a person had to lose one sense, which one would the individual choose, none even referred to touch in their processing the question!
There is much more in this text which deserves attention. Each situation is presented with scientifically based testing and validation. It offers the reader time to consider the implications of a handshake, a warm hug, a touch on the shoulder, patting the back or hand of a child, offering someone a warm drink, and many other examples of making a new awareness of touch a tool for better communication and relationships with other human beings in need of this tactile experience. The book is highly readable and laced with stories that are fascinating, funny and surprising! Very nicely done, David J. Linden!

About the Author

The Science of Sound
Arthur H. Benade developed his interest in the acoustics of musical instruments growing up in Lahore (British India, now Pakistan) where his father was an educator. His interest in acoustics continued to grow as he earned a PhD in Physics at Washington University in St. Louis and joined the faculty of Case Institute of Technology, now Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, as a nuclear physicist.

The turning point came when the Physical Science Study Committee commissioned him to write the influential concise text, Horns, Strings and Harmony, which Anchor Books launched as a mass market–sized paperback in 1960 and which Dover reprinted in 1992. Known to have inspired generations of teachers, this clear and thoughtful study has sold more than 150,000 copies in all editions and has been translated into several languages. In the decade following the appearance of Horns, Strings and Harmony, Benade completed his more extensive text, Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics, first published by Oxford University Press in 1976 and reprinted by Dover in 1996.

In addition to his two books, Benade wrote more than 100 technical papers, contributed to many symposia, and lectured on acoustics all over the world. His range was far-reaching. Titles of his scholarly papers include "Mathematical Theory of Woodwind Finger Holes," "Resonance-Absorption Cross Section of a Pipe Organ," and "Spherical-Wave Approximation in Horns: Measured and Calculated."

Arthur Benade died in 1988 at the age of 62, one of the twentieth century's seminal figures in the world of acoustical research.

Perfect for Self-Study when used with other forms of study.

Perfect self-study guide for the CCENT/CCNA! NOTE: You'll need to download the errata and updates from the Cisco Press website. Included software is not the best for practice exams.

This is a perfect tool to add to your toolbox if you're going for the Cisco CCENT or CCNA. However, you'll probably need to supplement these books with additional study material. The books are very detailed and give a great explanation of the topics in the Cisco exams. You'll benefit from adding some additional training to supplement these books. I would suggest either a home lab with real equipment or a network simulator, this way you can fully experience IOS commands and configuration. I'd also suggest a video training course, such as CBT Nuggets.

Be sure to go to the Cisco Press website and download the errata and updates for the books (mostly the ICND-2 book has many updates since being published.) This way you'll be getting the latest information and training. Specifically, the ICND-2 book is lacking in subjects such as Rapid Spanning Tree, First Hop Redundancy Protocols, and OSPF/EIGRP. The free download of the updated content from Cisco Press has these topics covered in more detail. Also the errata will help with the few minor typo's the books have. So be sure to download them!!!

The included software leaves a lot to be desired. While it is handy having all of the book practice questions available on the computer, along with the chapter review quizzes, the included Practice Exams are not the greatest. I will say this, the practice exam and part-review quizzes are MUCH more difficult than the actual exam. Wendell Odom went out of his way to make the practice questions as literal as possible, so beware of several trick questions that you'll get wrong because you didn't pay attention to exactly how the answers are worded. This can be discouraging because you'll score low on the practice questions even though you think you know the content, in actuality it's a good thing. Once you can pass the practice questions with passing scores you should really know the content and be prepared for the real exam.

I passed the CCENT exam using these books along with CBT Nuggets videos and equipment in my home lab. I'm almost ready to take the CCNA exam and feel confident that I'll do well. I decided to review these books now that I've read through both of them a few times and have already taken one exam. Just remember, unless you already have experience with Cisco IOS and networking, you'll probably want to supplement your training with study materials other than these books. It's doubtful that just reading these books alone will fully prepare you for the exams.

Cisco approved CCNA Study Material - Be prepared to invest alot of time & money...

2 books: ICND1 100-101 and ICND2 200-101. Rather than take 1 exam I took the 2 exam process for CCNA. ICND1 book is the foundation for Cisco Switches and Routers. ICND2 book is mainly troubleshooting, Interior Routing Protocols, and some advanced concepts from the ICND1 book. It took me about 9 months to study for both exams, but the books aren't enough. I purchased the CCNA Network Simulator to practice. Without practice don't plan on passing. ICND2 exam asked me about ICND1 material and both exams omitted 1 crucial IT networking concept completely. Hours lost, time lost, money lost. Passed ICND1 but missed ICND2 by 2 or 3 questions.

Network+ helped so much, but don't assume this is the only investment you need to make. The newer versions of these books have more information.

This book is good as a reference

This book is good as a reference, but the material is presented in a manner that is overly complicated in comparison to the actual exam. Use this book as a reference, but understand that the language is much more in depth and sometimes wordy when compared to what the actual exam will present. Practice tests are also WAY harder than the exam, so those will help prepare you and feel more confident in the exam later on.

With epic games come epic art

[[VIDEOID:mo3CB33S79KWQFU]]The Art of God of War III is the second book in the Art of the Game series from Ballistic Publishing. Mine's the paperback edition but for the hardcore collectors, you can indulge yourself with the limited Special edition and the Folio edition, which have suede leather-bound covers and other luxurious finishing.

In this book are character studies, 3D models, environment art, production art and storyboards. Just because the imagery doesn't move in this book doesn't make them any less intense. That's my first impression of the book.

The concept art is incredible. The work featured are beautiful and extremely detailed. You get to see the true pained face of Hades (sculpted and textured), know whether or not Kratos brushes his teeth from the texture maps, laugh at the straightened out snakes on Gorgon Serpent's head as its in the T-pose, get close with the hot Poseidon Princess and Aphrodite, or just marvel at the muscles, blisters, or intestines of various creatures that made it into the game, as well as many of those that didn't.

All the things you want to get a closer look on, but just can't because they happen too fast on screen, are now all captured in high resolution for your viewing. The designs are amazing. After looking at them, I'm not too sure who my favourite character is anymore.

A good portion of the book is devoted to the atmospheric environments on the game. You can see these spectacular places as they were in their concept stages, and compare them to the production art which is close to what you see in the game. Everything just looks really grand, Olympus City, Hades' underworld, Hercules' Arena, Labyrinth and all. This is truly one hell of a world that can only be created by talented artists.

There's also the commentary and interesting information that weren't even in the bonus section of the game disc.

The art direction for the game and art is wonderful. This is an intensely good art book. Highly recommended.

Very realistic artwork

This book is jam packed with lifelike artwork. The detail is absolutely amazing and it makes you think if you move your hand over the pages you could actually feel texture. The book is 272 pages and each page is a masterpiece in itself.

Throughout the book the artists make comments on the art and about the characters and such. This really helps give you an idea how they went about the process and what they were hoping to achieve with each character, location, etc...

The book covers everything from the characters, monsters, bosses, the character development, the story telling, the environments, and everything that went into making the game. The character art is especially nice to look at since they put extra detail into that section to make the texture really stand out and let you feel like you could feel each and every wrinkle in their skin and such. The environment art has excellent lighting and the colors really add to the effects. They have pictures of the characters in the 3D from before any colors and such are added so you can see the entire process.

Overall this book is full of beautiful art and lots of detail and realistic textures. The artists add their own personal touch and talk about a lot of the work in the book. It amazes me the amount of detail they can get into the characters and give that lifelike appearance. This is a must get for any God of War fan.

A superb text

As a teacher of mathematics I have used a number of different algebra texts and evaluated many others. After an extensive search for a text that would meet the needs of students preparing for college-level mathematics, I decided that this book had no equal. The exposition is both clear and rigorous, and the problems are of real mathematical depth without being too difficult for most students. One of the best aspects of the book is the extensive drill on algebra skills included in every section.

The Best Algebra II/Trigonometry Text Available

I used this book (when it was written by Mary P. Dolciani) in 1973-74 as a junior in high school and loved it. The recent revisions continue the excellence of Dolciani and the series. The theory is sound and the examples are easy to follow. Especially important is the numerous exercises graded in difficulty that help the student master the material. This book actually makes students THINK and does not spoon feed the material.
I can't say enough great things about this text. My school district uses this text for the honors tract (9th/10th grades) but uses another text for the "regular" 11th grade Algebra II sequence. I feel this is unfortunate because all students can benefit from the rigors of this book.

It is an invaluable tool in its own right, but is especially worthwhile in preparation for advancing to upper level math concepts. The sections dedicated to word problems have particularly relevant real world applications, addressing the "When are we ever gonna have to use this?" issue with convincing examples. The organization is intelligent, uncluttered, and methodical. As a resource, this volume represents an investment of substantial educational merit, and uncompromising quality.

About the Author
Born in California, Anita Loos�(1893–1981) was herself a celebrity of the Jazz Age that produced Lorelei Lee. She began writing movie scripts by the time she was twelve, and before her death in 1981 she had written an enormous number of stories, screenplays, and more. She was also the author of an autobiography, A Girl Like I.

Jenny McPhee is the author of A Man of No Moon, No Ordinary Matter, and The Center of Things. She lives in London.

Blondes DO have more fun

You could say that author/screenwriter Anita Loos invented the chick-lit genre. Her entertainingly fluffy satire "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" certainly fits the bill, with its love-seeking heroine and amusing jokes. It never dips far below the surface, but its lightness is part of its appeal.

"A gentleman friend and I were dining at the Ritz last evening and he said that if I took a pencil and a paper and put down all of my thoughts it would make a book." Meet Lorelei Lee, a pretty blonde socialite with a love of jewels, men, and luxury. She has a married boyfriend, but is convinced to go abroad so her name won't be "smirched."

So Lorelei and her pal Dorothy head off to Europe, bumping into exalted people (like "Dr. Froyd") and winning the hearts of wealthy men, in between days-long parties. Gold-digging, millionaires, money and love all get wrapped up in the tangle of Lorelei's everyday life...

Lorelei first appeared in Harper's Bazaar, and a short story stretched out into a full-length novel that appeared in serials. A first edition sold out almost instantly. Now Lorelei has countless descendents -- sure, those determined gals have been updated for the twenty-first century, with jobs and Web access. But light women's fiction could be seen to stem from Loos's novel.

A satirical edge runs through "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," poking fun at the jazzy gals whom Loos had to deal with regularly. Loos doesn't spare anything -- the book is riddled with intentional typos, like "encyclopediacs," "safires" and "maskerades" (yet she can spell "champagne"). The shallowness of the flappers is best shown in straight-faced jokes about the latest Parisian styles of buttons. Loos's satire doesn't bite down to the bone, but it does scratch lightly in a deliciously catty way.

Lorelei has an entertaining mix of determination, idiocy, and a constant belief in her own towering intellect. She's so much fun it's hard not to like her, in spite of the fact that she's an utter airhead. She talks matter-of-factly about how she has "almost one of everything" (diamond-wise), and tries to reform the entire world (without success, needless to say).

Gentlemen may prefer blondes, and people seeking a fun light read may prefer "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." If you are in the mood for vintage chick-lit, Loos's witty little novel is a fun diversion.

Clueless ?

Lorelei lives for shopping, rich men, idleness reforming her earthy companion Dorothy and becoming educated by Gus Eisman, button king. Eisman-her mentor, sends her and Dorothy to Europe in the interest of their education following Lorelei's threat to marry a novelist . En route she endures many admirers shopping and gifts and eventually meets the wealthy moral crusader Henry Spoffard and ponders marrying him....
The novel that introduced the world to the dumb clueless blonde siren , but is lorelei really any of these ? Blonde and a siren, maybe, but she uses all to her advantage, and many of her secret thoughts are voiced by her "unrefined" constant companion, Dorothy !
A great comic novel, oft (palely ) imitated. Its not often you can trace and read the novel that brought the worlds attention to something; that blondes have more fun !

The air head who overrates her intellectual prowess is cute, but this book is a one trick pony. Lorelei simply sees life as "diamonds are a girl's best friend," she wants to shop for hats, men are her sugar daddies. I'm sure this book was uproariously funny in the 1920's.

I guess you had to be there.
