A deep dive into Views using a unique format

This book is one of the (I can only assume) many Drupal 8-focused books that will be released in the coming months. It is a very good deep dive into many of the hidden corners of the Views module, albeit with an interesting format. Not completely structured like a typical how-to software book, Gregg takes a bit more of a novel approach (pun intended) - he takes the reader on a journey through the Views module through the eyes of Lynn, a small business owner (Lynn's cat and Drupal consultant also have prominent roles). While some readers might find the story-ish elements distracting, they add a certain degree of warmth to the book - something I can only assume a subset of readers will more than appreciate.

There are several stand-out chapters of this book, and luckily they're on some of the more difficult Views-related topics including contextual filters, relationships, and field rewrites. For people with questions about these topics, these chapters are more than worth the price of the book.

Overall, this is a welcome addition to the Drupal family of books, and one that I can honestly recommend for users that feel like there are aspects of the Views module that are still a mystery to them. The novel-like structure of the book normally doesn't get in the way of the lesson, but for readers who normally doesn't read technical books front-to-back (instead cherry picking only chapters of interest), it might be a bit distracting. While this is properly identified as a Drupal 8 book, much of the content is also valid for Drupal 7, including some of (in my opinion) the strongest chapters.

Conversational tone is easy to read and helps explain difficult concepts with ease

Mastering Drupal 8 Views takes a different approach to web development books. Most books guide you through a process, step by step, in a very cold mechanical manner. This book differs from that approach completely.

The writing style of this book was hard to accept at first. Because, as I previously stated, web development books aren't usually written in conversational language. After the first chapter I realized that the first-person Point of View, tone, and practicality of speech the author uses had me understanding much more about each Views feature than other books on the topic. It was at that point that I realized that the background story was essential in building up the "real world" application of the tasks you are performing. I proceeded to go back and actually read it, rather than skipping it, which I usually do with books like this.

After each session with Lynn, the protagonist of the story, you are brought into a room with her Drupal mentor, Jim. Jim brings it home with high level technical details, explaining the most confusing of View settings with practical language and are immediately relatable. I feel as if Jim were a real person, he and I would be friends.

The only issues I had with the book were out of the authors control.

Writing a book on a product that changes so rapidly, like Drupal 8 does, must have been a difficult process. Gregg makes note of this throughout the book. Noting where there may be discrepancies along the way. The inclusion of these was a blessing and a curse, as many times you aren't sure whether or not a setting will actually exist.

Overall, this book is a great master course on Drupal 8 Views. It is a book suitable for beginners, who are just getting started. It also brings a lot to the table for Views masters who are looking to see what has changed when moving to Drupal 8. I'd recommend that anyone interested in learning Views give this a read.

Mastering Drupal 8 Views is an Engaging Learning Experience

Never did I think a skill-building manual could be informative AND engaging. In Mastering Drupal 8 Views, Gregg Marshall tells the story of Lynn, an owner of a realty firm with a Drupal website. She is charged with enhancing her firm's site. Although she has a basic understanding of Views, she sets out to learn everything she can about it.

Gregg Marshall brings you along on Lynn's website and skill development journey through Views in an easy-to-follow, relatable tone. He does not assume the reader has any less or more Drupal knowledge than Lynn. The reader will learn Views skill in a very practical sense. For example: the purpose of relationships in Views is X and by using them, Lynn is able to do X on her website and, furthermore, Y and Z, too. Then you'll follow Lynn's path to implementation (pitfalls and all).

Gregg does a great job of presenting the lessons in such a way that you can steadily build and refine your skill from the beginning or jump in at a point where you feel confident.

About the Author
A top graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, L. David Marquet commanded the nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine USS Santa Fe from 1999 to 2001. Santa Fe earned numerous awards for being the most improved ship in the Pacific and the most combat-effective ship in the squadron. Since leaving the Navy he has worked with businesses nationwide as a leadership consultant. David also teaches graduate level leadership at Columbia University. This is one book about leadership that you should read!

I am skeptical about books on leadership. Most are written by persons who have reached positions of hierarchical authority in organizations and then anointed themselves "leaders." They don't talk about the political infighting and maneuvering that got them the job. Instead they wax eloquent about their skill in developing people - skills that frequently exist only in their imagination and the book they have written which book is often fiction parading as non-fiction. I was a contributing editor for one of the major business magazines and have met plenty of CEOs. I will leave it to you to guess how many times insiders have told me that the book their chief has written is wildly off the mark.

I have not met any of the persons that David Marquet commanded, but I will lay a substantial wager that many will follow him wherever they can.

Full disclosure: I am biased. I think that David is a leader, not a commander or a CEO or a senior officer but an authentic leader, for two reasons: 1) his views conform largely to my own, and 2) He undeniably moved a top of the line US nuclear submarine form bottom of the heap to the top by many objective measures.

David's views on leadership, and I repeat I heartily endorse these, are:

1) "Our greatest struggle is within ourselves. Whatever sense we have of thinking we know something is a barrier to continued learning."
2) The way to build a great team is to push decision making down, way down. The more each person feels he has the ability to do what he needs to in his immediate working environment, the more he will "own" his job and the more engaged he will be.
3) Engaged people will bubble with ideas about how to make the whole enterprise better. Some of these ideas will be relevant to a particular section and some for the entire organization. For the larger scope ideas, the originators will go out and get the cooperation/approval of others necessary to make the improvement happen.
4) It is not enough to push the decision making way down. You also have to send down responsibility, authority and the requisite resources. If you do not do this simultaneously, you simply increase the frustration level. Would you invite some one to come and smell dinner but not eat it? Case closed.
5) The mission is critically important. What is it, how is it defined and communicated, and is it a critical determinant of what decisions are made and how they are made? The answers to these questions will determine the success of the organization.

There is much more but these give you the picture. There are wonderful anecdotes throughout the book. For example, Marquet relates an incident where he was denied the opportunity to sail with a submarine whose command he was to assume within a month. He just wanted to get a quick read on what he would soon be facing. The departing captain refused to take him for many reasons mostly unexplained. One explained reason was that Marquet would have taken up scarce sleeping space. What is interesting is the lesson Marquet draws from this incident and how it shapes his own future actions. On every submarine and ship, and in every squadron and battalion, hundreds of captains were making thousands of decisions to optimize the performance of their commands for their tour and their tour alone. If they did anything for the long run it was because of an enlightened sense of duty, not because there was anything in the system that rewarded them for it. We didn't associate an officer's leadership effectiveness with how well his unit performed after he left. We didn't associate an officer's leadership effectiveness with how often his people got promoted 2, 3 and 4 years hence. We didn't even track that kind of information. All that mattered was performance in the moment."

There is one other reason I find this book invaluable. We all know that a good question is worth more than an hour of detailed instruction. Socrates certainly thought so. Each chapter has several profoundly thought provoking questions at the end. If you grapple with these questions, you may well find that your view of the world is being turned around. Here is a random example: "Are your people trying to achieve excellence or just avoid making mistakes?" Think about the implications of this for your organization.

I'm impressed Marquet successfully codified the mechanisms and activities that turned his ship around

First, I am a 30 year U.S. Navy veteran. I want to say I'm lucky I was never involved in the part of the Navy bent on blind followership that David Marquet describes as the starting condition of the USS Santa Fe but I don't think it was luck. Don't get the wrong impression of the entire U.S. Navy based on his experience. There are elements of the Navy that operate just as Marquet describes though and I am impressed that he could codify the mechanisms and activities that turned his ship around. I had successful tour after successful tour of duty in the Navy using many, not all, of the techniques Santa Fe adopted in a short period with such dramatic results. I just did what seemed right to me but never took the time to codify what it was that made it right. This book really outlined and clarified what it was that made it work over and over for me. I truly appreciate the courage and the intelligence it takes to make such a drastic positive change. You may not have ever experienced life in military service but I can tell you that what Marquet describes here works in both military service and the private sector. Now that Marquet has taken the time to tell the story of what worked, how the mechanisms were developed and has published the recorded methods and results I feel I have a been given a compass to help guide me in the future. I've been a successful leader on highly successful teams for a long time and I see attaining even greater success in the future with this information. The book is written in easily understood language, using brilliant analogies and clear, concise prose that anyone can appreciate. Start on page 1 and read all the way through. I highly recommend the book and suggest learning and sharing widely.

Brilliant Leadership Strategy

I've chosen a 5 star rating because David Marquette's approach to leadership, and his description of it in this book, is unlike almost every example of leadership we're familiar with. In "leader-leader" it's a shared organizational effort to promote clarity and competence. An example is how Marquette suggested his team speak their intentions out loud before taking the kinds of actions which, if done wrong, would have negative consequences. By adopting this practice, his nuclear submarine crew was able to catch more mistakes before they were made. Through this method they were able to become the most highly recognized submarine in the Navy. What's an even deeper testimony to the success of this method is that men who served under Marquette's leadership went on to high ranking levels in the Navy at a much higher rate than the average. I would recommend Turn the Ship Around! to anyone who leads a team and wants to inspire competence and shared responsibility with those they lead.

A phenomenal book that has a very clever and interesting cliffhanger ending. It will leave you unable to wait for the final book which I feel will answer all of the questions presented in the first and second books in a spectacular way!

Great Read

This is such a great book! It is one of the best Chris d'Lacey books I have ever read. But be warned, you MUST read the first book, The Dark Inheritance before you read this one. Also if you are a little skittish about creepy stuff you should not read this book or the book before. It deals with some pretty creepy stuff so be warned. Other than that is is amazing. It will hook you from beginning to end, especially near the end. The cliffhanger ending isn't as big as the last book, but it is still good. Hope you enjoy this book just as much as I did.

This is a must have for children

My 6 year old daughter received this book as a gift. I highly recommend it for teaching values about saving money, being charitable and spending appropriately. The story is so wholesome and the illustrations are fabulous. My daughter loves reading it with us.

Every child should have this book

This is a great little book, a real treasure. The aim is to introduce to children a way of life that is creative, kind, thoughtful, simple and beneficial to all. Not only is it instructive to children but it is also a useful concept for adults, especially in these economically distressed times. The illustrations are beautiful as only April can do. I think this is a great new baby gift, shower gift, birthday gift or just an "I love you" gift. And think of the memories you would make taking your own child upon your knee and reading and talking to him/her about the beauty of living this way. This book will be a classic!

A lovely book, and a great discussion starter

Follow the teachings of a family as they teach their children basic financial management. By using three different cups, the family shows how money can be portioned out for saving, spending, and charitable giving. The child learns to split his money between the cups, having a visible reminder that each day there is a choice in terms of how to handle one's money. The lessons are accompanied by lovely full color illustrations.

I thought this book was simply lovely. The writing presented the concepts in a very basic, easy to understand way that will be engaging to children. Parents can easily read this book to their children while presenting three cups of their own to institute the lesson within the story. I think it is quite valuable, and a great starting point that will allow parents to have discussions about charitable giving, and the fact that there are so many in great need. This is a lesson my own parents taught me at a young age, and I love that this book can be a vehicle to pass the valuable lesson on to other children.

I particularly loved the illustrations in the book. I read an ebook, but if I had a child I would prefer to have a hard copy so that he or she could go over the concepts spelled out in the story and illustrations on their own. In short, I thought the book was simply gorgeous and a perfect starting point. If you are looking for a book to help your child learn about money management, and charitable giving, then this is the book for you.

My highlighter ran dry (Seriously!)

As a CEO of a Silicon Valley Startup, Mr. Willcox's excellent book has become required reading for my entire team. Sharp, insightful, and full of unique examples backed by solid science, The Business of Choice describes how we (humans) make the choices we do. Real "actionable" intelligence here that will help the butcher, baker, and candlestick maker. It will ALSO help the banker, investor, marketeer, venture capitalist and the entrepreneur. Mr. Willcox has done a terrific job illustrating the principles that have reliably driven behavior for millions of years.

The Business of Choice also happens to be seriously entertaining. Packed with real-world examples of every-day decisions that each reader can identify and relate to in their own lives, Mr. Willcox's well-crafted narrative effectively fires the imagination. It has been over a month since I turned the last page and I still find myself talking to colleagues, associates, and customers about many of the principles covered in this book. Powerful stuff if you are building a brand, selling a product, or seeking to influence and inform. In a world where everyone seems to spend their time seeking and "edge," I think I've found one. Bravo.....

Solid, well referenced and complete book

The business of choice is a late in the publishing cycle of Marketing and Neuroscience. Books such as Think Fast, Think Slow, Why we Decide and the Dan Ariely books have covered much of this ground before. The Business of Choice does a good job bringing these and other more academic papers into focus, lending it well to a student of the subject rather than someone who wants a quick read in order to sound smart. This may not be the first book I would recommend, Arielly's work is much more accessible, but The Business of Choice provides depth and a marketing perspective that these other books lack.

Strengths

The Marketing perspective is one of the strengths of the book. Willcox discusses brain science from this perspective in a clear and almost clinical way. The results is a series of short chapters that help the non-marketing oriented person understand both marketing and the brain.

Completeness is another strength of this book. Willcox has researched and cross referenced the book well highlighting studies and providing paper references that few offer.

The chapters are short, clear and provide useful recaps at the end. This is a book that is easy to read, particularly if you focus on the first sentance of each paragraph and then read particular paragraphs of interest.

Challenges

The book is rather dry in its tone. It is more of an explanation than telling a story or advancing an argument. You will have to work at it in some parts to get the value of particular chapters, but its well worth it.

Overall, a solid addition to anyone who has been studying or interested in the connections between brain science, consumerism and marketing

Not just for marketers

Matthew Willcox is the real deal. He provides us with a complete and astonishing overview of how humans arrive at decisions. He starts the book by outlining that our decisions shape us; how we choose defines who we are. Like a master chef peeling an onion, he folds away layer after layer, exposing all the dark musty corners of our brains that aren’t used to seeing much light. Then he takes that information and brings it to life by giving us examples (many from his own life and experiences). He has an ability to see connections where others don’t, and has a knack for describing those in a way that is simple, complete and refreshing; he basically makes us see things with new eyes.
Willcox weaves science into the book, but instead of thinking about science as merely a way to quantify or validate his conclusions, or as limiting/constraining, Matthew paints the science he presents as inspiration; as a way to advance ideas.
Willcox also has a very compelling voice, presenting his ideas to us with a healthy dose of self-deprecating wit. This book is aimed at marketers; people who sell stuff to others. I believe this book is a great resource for those who create stuff for people as well; writers, illustrators, designers, architects…anyone interested in how people make decisions.

Olson, whose Logic of Collective Action stands as a landmark work of political economy, died in 1998 before putting the finishing touches on this book. As it stands, it serves as an appropriate coda to Olson's long and productive career, summarizing his major achievements while still contributing new insights to the post-communist debates. As he grapples with the forces that undermine economic vitality, Olson worries over a central question: Why has economic performance been so much better after the defeat of fascism in Germany and Japan than after the collapse of communism in Soviet-style states? In probing this question, Olson examines the complex relationships between the role of the state and economic performance, arguing that "there is no way of explaining the extreme poverty of many nations without taking account of the extent to which they are misgoverned." The lay reader will easily grasp Olson's broad and practical--if not especially vivid--discussions, and specialists will value his excellent analyses of the economic machinations of Soviet-type autocracies, including a fine reading of Stalin's diabolical manipulation of Russia's tax structures. As the world attempts to salvage what's left of the post-communist economies, it must contend with disablingly high rates of inflation and inefficient, state-owned businesses. A good way to set the right questions.

It seems old fashioned and outdated, in fact it set the stage for what the World should look at to create wealth, value and enhance growth.
Of course it will not happen overnight, but some ideas maybe more than useful in Emerging Economies as well as in Old Democracies which today are out of touch with the new paradigms and reality.

An update of Mr. Olson's ideas and concepts nearly 30 years after the fall of Berlin Wall, Tienamen and Emergence of Emerging Economies + The fast growth of digital technologies, is welcomed and should be quite interesting and useful, maybe as a way to find an exit to the looming "secular stagnation"....

The Dictatorship of Special Interests

If there is a leading economic text to act as a guide to the new milenium it is probably this one.

Olson firmly rejects the idea that economics can be understood without the political context of power relationships that surround commercial activity.

He makes the interesting observation that lively markets exist throughout the Third World and he refers to these as "self-regulating" markets with a notable characteristic being their short time horizon. Essentially there is the simultaneous payment for and delivery of goods.

He contrasts this with advanced democracies that have "NON self-regulating" markets i.e. what he calls "socially contrived markets" that allow much greater predictability and longer time horizons based on contract law and state protected property rights, allowing such things as long-term capital investment, stock markets, complex manufacturing and banking.

An established democracy with widely spread power and solid property rights is clearly desirable but he makes the point that democracy is a historically recent invention that has only partly displaced traditional autocracies. Autocracies (dictatorships) concentrate power in one person or a small group at the expense of the majority and are maintained by the threat of force and often use an "ideology", for example Communism of Fascism, to justify their exclusive and permanent right to power.

The book shows that democratic free markets with an impartial rule of law will in the long rule out distance unstable dictatorships, but he proceeds to suggest that long-established democracies are prone to a few problems of their own, that in some cases can prove fatal. Most notably special interest groups can gain (undemocratic) special access to political power for their own gain at the expense of the national majority. A fine example would be the enormously costly bailout of the speculative bad debts of Wall Street banks passed onto American taxpayers, or alternatively (again in the U.S.), the medical/ insurance lobby that manages to deliver a less health population at twice the cost of similar European systems.

An interesting observation is that the remarkable success of German and Japan after WW2 was in large part the result of the complete destruction intricate systems of special relationships allowing a fresh start along clean free market lines, but of course, at the great social cost of war.

Balanced, Insightful, and relevant

Power and Prosperity is an example of economics at its best. First of all, it takes a balanced or neutral approach to its subject matter. The author is not out to prove the superiority of either markets or government. Governmental power is a double edged sword to Olson. Government power promotes prosperity by restraining 'roving bandits' or special interests. Government power is also susceptible to the influence of special interests. Olson also discusses the merits and faults of markets. Markets are ubiquitous and can lead to prosperity, but often do not. Government has a role in this. That is, he finds blame for this in the most negative aspects of government. Olson does not assume market efficiency either. He explains it, as well as some possible limitations to markets.

This is also a highly insightful book. Much of his analysis derives from his earlier work on "the logic of collective action'. He also uses some transaction costs and basic supply and demand/substitution effect reasoning to explain historical events. Students in my comparative classes had more trouble with this book than any other, but it is still manageable. Reading it might be difficult for those who lack an education in economics. But I am not sure if there is an easier way to say what it says, and what it says is most interesting. The concepts the author employs makes a greater understanding of different economic systems and historical periods possible. This is penetrating analysis.

It is also highly relevant. Much of this book focuses on the Soviet Union. One could say that the USSR is a done deal- it failed so forget about it. It is, however, important to understand why it failed so as to avoid repeating such errors in the future. This is what the Author is driving at with in his use of the Soviet example. There were reasons for the failure of the Soviet system that also apply to problems in other nations- not to mention Russia today. The misuse of power has the potential to prevent prosperity as much now as it did under Stalin and Khrushchev.

Does this book have faults? Certainly. Olson takes too positive a view of Stalin's industrialization program (not that he praises Stalin). Olson dismisses complete privatization, or anarchy, too easily. There is nothing wrong with arguing against anarchy. But, his arguments against privatizing the state (i.e private police and courts) are little more than an unsupported dismissal of such arrangements. If he did not want to debate that issue, he should not have taken such a strong stand. He also might have mentioned a few things about FA Hayek- especially on p136 where he wrote "a bureaucracy cannot process all the information needed to calculate an optimal allocation or put it into practice".

While there are a few faults to this book, it is still excellent. It is a must read for anyone interested in either comparative economics and politics, Globalization, or the economic history of the Soviet Union.
