About the Author
David Guth is an associate professor at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, University of Kansas. Guth received a B.A. in Radio-Television-Speech from the University of Maryland (1973) and an MA in Journalism from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill (1990). He served associate dean of the school from July 2004 to July 2009 and as chair of the school's Strategic Communication track from January 2000 to August 2003. His areas of research interest are crisis communications, political communication, and community journalism. Prior to joining the faculty in August 1991, he served in several public information positions within the administration of North Carolina Governor Jim Martin. That included four years as the chief spokesman for the state's prison, probation, and parole systems. He was also a broadcast journalist in Kentucky, Indiana, Georgia, New York, and North Carolina and is a recipient of numerous reporting honors, including the prestigious Peabody Award. Media Guide for Attorneys, a book he coauthored in 1996, received the American Bar Association’s Partnership Award. He is the coauthor of Strategic Writing: Multimedia Writing for Public Relations, Advertising and More (undergoing revision for its fourth edition) and Adventures in Public Relations: Case Studies and Critical Thinking. Bridging the Chesapeake: A ‘Fool Idea’ That Unified Maryland (Old Line Publishing; Hampstead, MD) was released in December 2013.

Charles Marsh is the Oscar Stauffer Professor at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and has been a faculty member there since 1989. He teaches courses in public relations, communication ethics, and theories of strategic communication. Before joining the faculty at KU, Marsh was senior editor of corporate publications for the J.C. Penney Company and editor of American Way, the inflight magazine of American Airlines. His research focuses on applications of rhetoric and philosophy to modern disciplines of persuasive communication such as public relations, advertising, and marketing. He is author of Classical Rhetoric and Modern Public Relations and Public Relations, Cooperation, and Justice. With David Guth and Bonnie Poovey Short, he is coauthor of Strategic Writing: Multimedia Writing for Public Relations, Advertising, and More. His research has been published in several academic journals, including Public Relations Review, Journal of Public Relations Research, and Public Relations Inquiry. Marsh has served as a communications consultant for Ralston Purina, the USA Film Festival, the United States Information Agency, the American Management Association, JCPenney, and other organizations. At the University of Kansas, he is winner of the HOPE Award and the Kemper Award for teaching excellence.

Best book on depression I have read!

As one who has suffered the effects of depression and anxiety for over 10 years, in addition to leading a deep prayer life, this book is truly a blessing. I have read several books on depression, some Christian and some specifically Catholic. This is by far the most excellent resource for depression I have been privileged to read.

Dr. Kheriaty not only addresses the topic of depression itself, but the spiritual life as well, for man is not just a mind and a physical body, but is imbued with an immortal soul. The healing of the soul cannot be separated from the healing of body/mind.

The author writes on topics including types and causes of depression, depression and the spiritual life with enlightening insights on differentiating depression from specific spiritual trials, suicide, treatments, and spiritual help with a focus on the virtue of hope.

There is no clear line of demarcation between the pysche and the spirit and Dr. Kheriaty makes that clear in abundance. He stresses the importance of treating the soul along with the mind which I found quite refreshing as well as his faithfulness to the Catholic tradition.

This is a book I would recommend to all spiritual directors and psychologists. I, for one, am most grateful to the author for helping me to continue my path to healing. Thank you.

Helpful Read for Catholics

I bought this book a few years ago and kept telling myself I would read it soon--soon finally came and I am quite pleased with the substance of this book. The book is geared to someone with at least some basic knowledge of mental health and Catholic theology, but one need not be an expert at either to understand this book. As pointed out in the book there are gradients to depression and I would not advise giving this to a person who is severely depressed--this book is more suited for an individual looking to learn about depression or someone with a more moderate depression.

The authors do an excellent job of removing some of the stigma or guilt often associated with depression and encourage readers to see that depression cannot be limited to one particular cause. Dr. Kheriaty addresses one issue facing many of faith and mental health issues--why can't I just pray my way out of it? The authors then go on to explain the difference between depression and spiritual issues (lukewarmness, acedia, etc). The authors distinctions between mental health issues and spiritual issues are very clear.

I found the explanation of "dark night of soul" versus depression particularly enlightening as many of my own clients struggle with this distinction and often think that "God is just testing me." The authors helpfully explain, in my simplified version, that the "dark night" is more related to spirituality, whereas depression is going to affect other areas of the patient's life. The dark night is definitely a spiritual issue that requires a spiritual remedy, sacraments, prayer, etc, whereas depression is not solved spiritually due to the persons "darkened" state (biological, relational, medical illness).

I also appreciated the authors encouragement to seek appropriate mental or spiritual help to be spot on. I often hear Catholics joking about the Sacrament of Confession as therapy, but one who is truly depressed has a difficult time with hope and therefore struggles to pray their way out of depression (the authors certainly do not deny God's omnipotence, but clearly explain the struggles that a depressed person faces and how much of God's greatness can be ignored because the depressed person simply cannot experience). As the authors explain spirituality is a definite help with working through depression, but it only addresses one aspect of the whole person.

My only complaint with the book is the insistence that a depressed person seek the help of a psychiatrist over other mental health treatment providers. Many areas are not blessed with an abundance of psychiatrists, and/or are intimidated by the price of a single session, and need to find other mental health providers prior to seeing a psychiatrist or medical doctor for medication. I think it would have been more helpful to focus on a competent mental health care provider instead of an exclusive focus on psychiatrists. Dr. Kheriaty also rightly points out the tendency for psychiatrists to prescribe medication instead of actually offering therapy to the patient and that primary care physicians frequently do not maximize the dose.

An extremely helpful guide to helping Catholic struggling for helpfor the illness of Depression and/ or unrelenting

all forms of Depression, a loved one who has committed suicide, and unrelenting grief. Although it is written primarily for persons of the Catholic faith, it would be helpful to all who are Christian and look to scripture as a means to help them deal with the unrelenting pain of Depression. There is a very moving selection of prayers at the end that should touch and help every person trying to survive the indescribable pain of what is inadequately termed Depression.

Thought Provoking

Teaching capitalism in today's world is like describing water to a fish; we are surrounded by it, can't live without it and are unaware of the alternatives. Most have never experienced the depression, many have forgotten the days when communism was actually a threat. We are blind to the absolutely crucial nature of how our world works. Although we watched the stock market plummet in 1987 and have all learned valuable lessons from the internet boom & bust, I picked up this book because I wanted to know a bit more about how the scholars view capitalism.

The book takes the reader through a history of capitalism while briefly summarizing everything you forgot from college economics. While the discussion of the development of capitalism focused on some interesting questions of historical interpretation, the strength of this work is the description and analysis of how the capitalistic system works differently in different countries.

The power of capitalism is set forth as its ability to adapt. Where other systems--feudalism, communism, socialism, etc--failed was that they could not adapt to change. The book was an excellent overview; it was current, easy to read, and contains a fine list of resources for further study.

A Biased Introduction

I was expecting an (at least) relatively impartial introduction, but the author could not put his allegiances aside to produce such a book.

A more accurate title would be 'Capitalism: A Very Short and Very Biased Introduction by a Sociologist'.

The usual academic/liberal/Marxist/socialist prejudices are on full display: Capitalism is bad; Marx was right; Soviet Union is the "last great empire"; USA is evil and corrupting, etc., etc. Opinions all of which the author is entitled to hold and promote - but I think they are inappropriate for an introduction to capitalism.

What is most bothersome to me is the choice of words used - where a neutral adjective or verb could be used a pejorative was used in its place. Workers are always "exploited" and are "coerced" into accepting capitalism, and so on. The affect being that these opinions are presented as fact - there is no hint that the author is stating his opinion - and the facts just happen to match standard Marxist/socialist dogma. This seems to be a constant undercurrent in the author's work (see the table of contents for his work on Labour Movements: 'The Employer-Counter *Attack* [against Labour Movements], 'Conservative *Attacks* on Collectivism'). The poor worker is constantly assailed by the greedy conservative capitalists - rage against the machine - working men unite - etc.

Then there are the blatant statements in the book's concluding pages:

"Scandals have been, however, a recurring feature of capitalism." Where should I start with this statement? Only capitalism? Not in the vaunted USSR? "Feature"? I can almost here him snickering with his comrades in the collective. Then, in the very next sentence: "The true capitalist is motivated by the amoral accumulation of money...". Of course; everybody knows this, so it is stated as fact. Fulcher should Just recommend Marx and Engels for further reading, as they do a better job delivering the message. Here, it sounds like hackneyed talking points.

Also, policies not approved by the author are always attached to a perpetrator: Thatcher, Reagan, Gorbachev, etc. The usual suspects. I'm curious why the "bad guys" get the name check - presumably so we know who to blame.

As alluded to in another review, aside from a back-handed compliment to Adam Smith, the identities of economists who are advocates of capitalism are not mentioned. I should say that Keynes is mentioned in somewhat neutral language. Of course, a two page uncritical primer on Marxism was necessary for an introduction to capitalism.

The "Further Reading" section continues the theme: no recommendations to read Smith, Ricardo, Friedman, Hayek, Samuelson, Krugman, Sowell...I suppose none of these economists/authors would buttress the author's storyline.

Almost forgot: I am sure the captions used for some of the photographs provided laughs for the crew responsible for this book:

Picture 13 shows four people reading stock market ticker tape - all looking happy (or at least unconcerned) - caption: "Traders watch the ticker tape as Wall Street crashes in 1929". Those amoral capitalists! Anyway, maybe it is a picture of actual traders and that it was taken in October of 1929, but there is no evidence that this what is actually depicted.

Picture 14 shows a bemused woman who doesn't seem to realize that she is being auctioned as the caption implies. Again, possibly correct, but the "List of Illustrations" provides no evidence that this is what is depicted.

Picture 15 is of the founders of Lastminute.com smiling, the caption describes them as "...looking pleased with themselves just before the company was floated..."

All very juvenile.

I do not recall anything in the book hinting that there are any positive or desirable aspects of the capitalist system. I am sure I would say the same thing about the VSIs on Racism or HIV/AIDS, but I don't think moral relativism is good editorial policy for a series of introductory books.

Somewhat ironically, along with this volume, I purchased Singer's VSI on Marx - I was hoping to be able read some contrast to what Marx was thinking. Oops. I guess not.

I might venture that the underlying issue is that authors/editors/contributors/publishers are all on the same bandwagon and see no need for impartiality - maybe that the book was produced at all fills this requirement in their opinion. When I purchase something published by Verso, Continuum or Von Mises Institute, I know I am likely to read something from a particular world view. I didn't think I would be able to say the same about Oxford University Press.

Good, quick read for a novice.

The book traces the origins of capitalism right from the trading days of East India Company. It discusses the presence of feudalism, its slow transformation into socialism, and finally its metamorphosis into capitalism. Once there, James does a great job of dissecting the facets of capitalism and the various forces that defines its nature - politics, business, labor unions, markets, currency, and others. He does this by comparing three distinct forms of capitalism - Swedish, British, and Japanese. Slowly the pieces of the puzzle start falling together.

In the last chapter, he discusses the various crises that have fallen upon/by capitalism. Per him, crisis is a by-product of this system and cannot be avoided. Thanks to the ever volatile consumer demand, never ending profit increasing, and the human nature in general. Economics 101 - Every person will act in order to maximize his/her profit.

This book is very lucidly written and I would suggest all to give this book a try and keep it in your book shelf, if possible. I cannot say that I am a master of this subject, but it has nevertheless built a foundation for me to develop my knowledge and make informed opinions about the events happening around me.

My therapist recommended this book which covers all types of grieving

I recently lost my dog, Little Dude, in a hit and run accident. He died in front of the Animal Hospital. We were too late. We were walkers and for three weeks I couldn't go near the park or where he was killed. My therapist recommended this book which covers all types of grieving. For me the Chapter on Lose of a Pet, got me through some really sad times.

This work offers a convincing and dispassionate assessment of an emotionally charged subject: court-ordered school desegregation in Boston and, most particularly, the white backlash associated with it. Calling the conflict a "war that nobody won," Formisano ( The Transformation of Political Culture: Massachusetts Parties, 1780s-1840s ) examines the social and economic roots of what he terms "reactionary populism," concluding that more than simple racism underlay it. Class was an important issue, as evidenced by the frustration of city residents dictated to by legislators and members of the media whose own children attended schools in the "lily white suburbs," beyond the reach of the controversial desegregation plan. He describes the variety of white responses to the court order, for example, South Boston's collective hard-core resistance in marches and clashes with police and West Roxbury's more individualist (white flight) and legalist approach. Here, too, are the public characters, such as Boston School Councillor Louise Hicks, and the street theater of protest, such as a mothers' prayer march led by Hicks counting her rosary beads.

Sailing in the wake of Common Ground , J. Anthony Lukas's prize-winning study of Boston's busing crisis ( LJ 8/85), Formisano focuses upon the white antibusers who, he believes, were more diverse in motivation and tactics than the rock-throwing mobs on television. Using interviews, press accounts, and the enormous secondary literature, he argues, as have Lukas and others, that race and class were knotted together in this "war nobody won." Formisano writes with empathy for the antibusers yet doesn't dismiss their racism; he finds little to praise between both sides' principals and concludes that school desegregation must confront "suburban residential apartheid." Lukas's journalistic tour de force is still the book to read on busing in Boston, but this, the most accessible scholarly work, may be the book to study. It is recommended for most academic and many public libraries.

Interesting account of a controversial and turbulent time

Ronald Forminsano has presented a fascinating look at the famous Boston busing crisis of the 1970's. He does a good job of establishing the basic facts and identifying the major players in the crisis. He gives a penetrating look at Judge Arthur Garrity who mandated that the South Boston white students be bused to Roxbury and the black students from Roxbury be bused to South Boston.

This mandate was very controversial from the beginning. President Gerald Ford spoke out as thinking the move was ill-advised. Boston mayor Kevin White tried his best to implement the judge's decision. He had his hands full with vocal opponents like Louise Day Hicks, John Kerrigan, and Pixie Palladino.

Formisano points out that there was a populist backlash from the residents of South Boston. Parents resented the fact that their children were selected for integration. The situation on the ground was turbulent as white students were persecuted in the black community and vice versa.

Formisano admitted that there were some problems with the mandate. However, he generally supported the plan as a means to establish overdue integration of the districts. The problem is that South Boston and Roxbury families were chosen to be pawns in a war that was not of their choosing. I believe that people have the right to receive and education in the region where they live. Roxbury and South Boston were not able to effectively protest the move because the residents were from a low socio-economic level and were not able to establish influential connections.

Roxbury and South Boston were arbitrary sources for Judge Garrity's social engineering experiment. Boston suburbs like Newton and Wellsley are lily-white and were even more in need of an influx of racial diversity. These wealthy and well-connected communities were not forced to integrate. The parents in those districts would have likely fought integration efforts with passion. However, these same "enlightened" parents were often proponents of the busing policies. As long as it did not effect their children, they supported the mandate. I find this to be very hypocritical and that the mandate unfairly discriminated against poorer students and families.

In the end, the busing policy did not benefit whites or blacks. A whole generation of students suffered the scars of being on the front line of this highly-politicized battle. I have friends who lived throught the crisis and they almost unanimously tell me that this policy was a complete disaster and a failed social experiment.

There was need for communities to integrate. There is no denying this fact. However, the integration could have occurred in a less-intrusive manner. For example, the METCO program is more voluntary and has enabled African-American children to broaden their horizons and have opportunities that would not ordinarily available. White communities benefit from the diversity in such instances. This was not the case in the Boston busing crisis. No one was the winner in this failed social experiment.

Overall, I liked Formisano's book. He outlined the basic information of the case. He argued the pros and cons of the controversy. He identified the supporters and opponents of the mandate with clarity. I disagree with his overall position, but I found the work to be heartfelt and sincere. The book was well-written and I learned a lot about this controversial period in Boston history that became a national news story in the contentious 1970's.

My Mother is on the cover!

A relative found this book and called me to take a look at it. That is definitely my mother Mazie Boulet, on the cover.
The little boy was with someone else that was cut out of the picture.
She was in Washington on a march to Stopping Forced Busing with other mothers of all races from Boston's multiple communities. It was raining buckets.
The facts in the book were NOT very accurate. My mom went though and made side notes of corrections. LOL!!
The man that wrote it is not even from Boston, he's in Florida.
My mother loved it as a present though.

Great diabetes, blood sugar eating plan you can stay on.

Written by a doctor who has diabetes, he gives you the facts about blood sugar control. Also included are healthy and tasty recipes. The information is easily understood and easy to implement. I lost 7 pounds in the first 2 weeks. I hope to continue to lose at least a pound a week. I don't have much to lose, but it has stubbornly stayed with me.

Books 4 and 5 review

The author continues with the saga of the Burrows family and those who have joined in the fight against the Chinese invaders. These two books are fast paced with lots of action, albeit, some action is once again far fetched and exudes the perspective that; the Chinese don't know what they're doing. Whenever they're attacked, by any of the Burrows clan, it's overly simplistic and everyone seems to know exactly what needs to be done to take them out. They've taken down four helicopters now with ease and precise measures, along with 50-60 invaders and other 'bad guys.' Pretty darn good for 'civilians.'

Over five books now (very short novels), they're just getting around to forming their 'militia.' The government thus far, doesn't seem to be fighting at all, and it's implied that; Ian Burrows is the only person that could or can possibly make all the difference in the world. I kept asking myself throughout these two books; "where the heck is the military?" There's no way there would only be National Guard personnel in a national situation like this.

I sense that this series is going to grow into a lot more short books before it's all done and over with. I haven't yet decided if I'll continue with this series, for it's beginning to bog down for me. Plus, if the author is paying someone to 'edit' for him...he's NOT getting his money's worth. There are words that are left out and usage of wrong words. Several times, the word "thought" is written as "though." This isn't something a spell check will pick up...it has to be proofread to catch these things.

Anyway...the premise of the story is good, it's just lacking some logical thought lines that would make the story flow and make more sense. For example; Any CIA operative would have went out and tracked down Captain Wu immediately, once it was brought to their attention that he was in the area. But Ian doesn't do that...he lets it go, and it costs them dearly. That was not logical and made no sense...especially when they had the manpower to do so. All the kids are depicted as 'SEAL Team" members who are ready and willing to take the fight to the enemy. And Mary? Here's a gal that; within two weeks, becomes so gung-ho that she wants to kill anything that moves, yet in book one, she didn't like guns and was scared of guns. But because her partner was killed by the invaders, and Ian gave her a 15 second pep talk, she is now the 'sniper' for the Burrows clan. It's kind of laughable, really.

Another fast moving book in the series.Read 'em all!

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest in the series and will continue to look forward to the next. The book moves quickly and you're always left wanting more.

Love this series! Wish it were all in one longer book!!

GREAT quick read! I love TEOTWAWKI fiction and this is one of my top three favorites out of the dozens I've read. Not implausible and gives some good tips in amongst the story without taking away from it. The ONLY issues are 1- a few editing issues where words are misspelled and 2- I HATE having each "book" really be a chapter!!!! PLEASE don't do this! I would much rather buy them all at once as one BOOK instead of 5 or more chapter sized short stories. That makes me crazy and the only reason I bought this is because of the great reviews. I normally will pass over any book less than 200 pages.
