A Mazda Must Have

If you have a Mazda Miata with a 1.8L motor and you plan to work on the car yourself this book is a must have and priceless. Let me tell you how this book helped me. I'm a 51-year-old parts changer. I do the basics Brakes, Exhaust, Tune Ups, Water Pumps. I needed to change the water pump in the Miata. Lucky for me I had this book. Changing the water pump involved removing the timing belt and pulleys, which I've never done before. When I got to the point where I realized that this is not a basic water pump job I took out the book. The book walked me through the job with informative step-by-step text and photos. I'm happy to say the car started right up and is running better than ever. I'm now so confident with the technical support I receive from this book that I would not hesitate to tackle any job on this car. This book covers it all.

Excellent Reference for the 1.8L Miata through 1997(8)

I do a lot of DIY maintenance and repairs. I recently purchased a 2000 Mazda Miata along with the model-specific Factory Workshop Manual. While Grainger's ...1.8: Enthusiasts Workshop Manual is intended for the earlier model, pre-1999, most of the guidance can be applied to the 1999-2000 with patience and ingenuity. I found that this manual, when combined with the Mazda Factory Workshop Manual and online resources, provide complete guidance for most tasks including major service. I particularly liked that Grainger included personal insight and tips & tricks that are helpful to a non-professional mechanic. The only issues I have with the Manual's presentation is that the small text is hard to read and the photos are small and some lack clarity. The last issue, which is not totally objectionable, is that the Manual is written with the "right and left" references from the perspective of someone standing behind the car looking forward (this takes some getting used to) - I took a red marker and wrote "left & right" to clarify these references. I would recommend this manual to any Miata owner that does his/her own work.

Startlingly Good

I spend way to much time on [...] I've long heard "the manual" (meaning the Mazda factory workshop manual) referred to as though it were the only thing worth having. I now own both the factory workshop manual and this The Enthuasiast Workshop Manual by Rod Grainger. I'm very pleasantly surprised at this manual. It's far easier to read than the factory manual and is vastly more through than a Haynes manual. Its also much cheaper. The factory manual new-- if you can find it (it recently went out of print) costs $100.00. While I'm sure that this manual does not cover every minute detail that the factory manual does, it is quite through and well organized. I'll not be reaching for the factory manual when working on my miatas. I can't imagine that I'll need it now that I have this. Very nice and an absolute bargain.

A Competent, but Unremarkable Text

The first two reviews are not very helpful, so I thought I would to write a better review.

The organization of the text is perfectly adequate. The author asserts the completeness axiom of the real numbers and then proves that the reals are the limits of Cauchy sequences and then Heine-Borel, etc. This a very common approach. Like most analysis books, it mostly overlooks that there are other ways of constructing the real numbers. I think it's important for neophyte mathematicians to understand that the choices made by their textbook are not the only choices and that other approaches are equally valid. The book progresses in a typical fashion from there. It ends with a good chapter on measure theory and Lebesgue integration.

Like many mathematics textbooks, it appears at first blush to be a list of definitions, theorems, and properties. However, the author does actually take a good bit of time to explain the significance of some the important results. Theorems are stated clearly with standard notations. He also restates some theorems in plain words to make them clearer. The end of chapter summaries are quite helpful in pulling together what was covered and why it is important. He takes some time to explain to students that some of the results, that initially seem arcane, are profound and indispensable in later chapters.

If your department assigns this book, don't hesitate to buy it. It is much better than many other analysis books. Though I would also recommend Understanding Analysis by Steven Abbott or the book known as "Baby Rudin" (google it). The first gives very lucid explanations of abstract concepts. The second is notable for its subtle and well-chosen "gaps", which are often left in math books for students to read between the lines and discover some depth on their own.

Professors Should Choose Another Book

This was my undergraduate textbook for Advanced Calculus I and II (as they were called at my school). I am returning to school to start my master's degree this next term and am going through the book to refresh my memory.

Wow, it is just the way I remember it. Frankly, I can't believe the other reviewers ratings. So, I thought I'd balance the average rating a bit with a review of my own.

When I was in college, this was my most dreaded reading material. It is a difficult subject to master, sure, but the author does not help matters by using failing to use a clear structure with emphasis on key points. Instead, there is barely any structure at all. Headings consist of unenlightening phrases such as "Theorem." Pragraphs are downplayed by the typesetting style as well, making each section almost an undifferentiated block of information. (The author has not even used an end-of-proof symbol!)

And not only is this book unfriendly, it is dry. The author tends to use strictly symbolic language when explaining in words would be so much clearer. In fact, he frequently skips the explanatory material altogether and moves straight to the examples. What is the context or object for these examples? The reader is mystified.

If you are a professor, please do not choose this book for your analysis class. I have a feeling it is only comprehensible to those who already thouroughly understand the material.

If you are a student who has come here to buy this book, you have my sympathy.

Not a beginner text

Examples are very difficult to understand. Proofs are also confusing because the author doesn't stray from writing everything in strict symbolic notations. The text itself is dry and lacks any clear explanation for students with no background in real analysis. This book may be treated as a good reference for professors, but it is a genuinely horrendous learning material for students. I suggest you buy a different text unless you have a prior knowledge in the subject.

Digest this information with a large bag of salt

First, let me say I appreciate the efforts of all who do the research and record their findings on the Western Martial Arts. I know that few of us have the resources or time to do this, so every little bit helps.
That said, I feel John Clements does almost as much damage as he does good. While his techniques can be of value and his explainations are fairly thorough, the prevailing attitude within this book is one of superiority. It is as if Mr. Clements believes his assertions are the only ones worth following. Having had the pleasure of attending workshops by various other Western Martial artists and scholars, I am always impressed with their openess that this is a continually expanding and growing rediscovery of the "lost" arts. Some of them freely admit that what they write today may be reinterpreted by them tomorrow, and that others may have different views. I finished off Mr. Clements book feeling that you were either with him or against him. Unfortunately, because I also partake in stage combat and reenactments, I felt that I was automatically in the "against him" camp. He seemed to feel his was the best or only take on these techniques.
Those interested in pursuing the Western Martial Arts can certainly take some useful information from here, but read it carefully. Note what some of the other reviewers have said about innaccuracies. Read works by other authors. And best of all, attend some of the WMA symposiums and conferences which take place through the country

Mr. Clements means well in generally promoting the tenuous existence of European Historical Swordsmanship. Kudos to his efforts indeed. His publication has basically introduced the eyes of many, to the particular workings of this regal art and science. Thus, a maximum benefit for the historical fencing community at large.
On the dark side, most unfortunately - and I do mean so again and again, Clements' work is imbued with spectacular errors (i.e. Carranza's nationality; use of the term 'sparring' etc.) to name a couple. Such deficiencies resulting in historical inaccuracy and incorrect nomenclature, leaves me to ponder about the author's legitimacy. Mr. Clements seems to severely lack the fundamental understanding of the Christian European Zeitgeist of Renaissance Swordsmanship. In other words, the proper historical-mindset and spirituality for the accurate presentation of this work.
Without such assets in possession, any pedagogical text on the Occidental sword, be it a complex treatise or even, a user-friendly basic manual, can be and should be devalued. Hence, such applies to this book in its attempt to claim scholarly status. Clements, I am somewhat sure, realizes that by nature, all martial-arts embody a spiritual aspect that is absolutely essential.
However, given the porous quality of his presentation, he fails to comprehend in essence that the Western-European sword (and technique) are 'transcendent' beyond its martial capabilities. It (the sword), seriously seeks its Glory through the spiritual contribution of its manipulator thereby, 'it' being the personification of the swordsman. All of the great fencing masters adhered to this formula in practice and certainly, on paper.
No such aesthetic-spirit emanates at all from Clements. The tone of writing is 'jockish' and 'sportive' - contrary to the attributes of effective, academic-style communication. I suggest that he seriously refer to Mr. Aldo Nadi's work, specifically regarding such tone of spirit. Any further attempt at research by the author into the more complex insights of European rapier swordplay would indeed be a frightening aspect. Especially, after having laid a defective-base of knowledge.
Mr. Clements simply does not possess the 'swordsman's militant Roman Christian mentality' nor, the capacity to properly interpret (i.e. multi-language translation skills; contextual understanding) and instruct correctly from the masters. Representing the pristine scholarship of 'The Renaissance' carries with it enormous responsibility. Only the masters can lift and uphold such a globe.
I, the reviewer, am 'not' one of them. As a senior student of classical fencing and historical swordsmanship, I can however state cogently, that this author falters profoundly in the tact and spirit of that realm; all 'stop lights' apply here.

Surprisingly light, given the high flown title

Mr. Clements' work is an interesting read. It is also a great gift to those interested in Western European historical martial arts, as the library of modern materials dealing with this time period is extremely limited. That is, at root, part of the problem with Clements' work. While he makes an pseudo-scholarly attempt to bolster his work with period sources he is extremely short on citations. Why? Largely, I suppose, because Clements' work is more about the style his group, the HACA, has developed rather than what the period masters have to say.
Ironically, in this sense Clements is guilty of exactly what he accuses the SCA of; making up the techniques to fit his game rather than working to recreate purely historical techniques. (The only difference being that the SCA holds itself out as a spectator sport and makes no pretense of being a pure re-creation of medieval and renaissance combat while Clements and his group do.)
Clements is given to strong opinions, some of which appear to be unfounded, hyperbole, high falootin pretensions, vitrol and some level of personal promotion.
Further, because the field of re-creating medieval martial arts is so new, much of Clements misinformation is accepted by many as valid simply due to the fact that they have few modern works to compare it to. The fact is any serious student of renaissance or medieval martial arts should go "straight to the horse's mouth" and read the period masters.
That being said, Clements work is a boon to modern martial artists simply because it "gets the ball rolling" and adds another work to the scant library available today.

Great book for beginners

Great book, I am a rote beginner and I learned so much from this series. The vocuabulary is easy at first and progresses somewhat in difficulty. Key words and phrases are repeated for reinforcement. Present tense is used mostly throughout. If you are a beginner, then this book is for you. Highly recommneded.

Easy Reading Spanish

In addition to the easiness this book provides in reading, the remarkable advantage is the repetition of key words and phrases. The words repeat over and over, which makes foreign-language learning and reading effective and fun. For children who are reading this book in their first language, it is beneficial, again because of the word repetitions.

Studies show that anyone new to a language needs to be exposed to new words approximately 35 times, for the brain to remember, understand, and make the word part of the vocabulary. This book gives the learner that opportunity. It provides a sense of accomplishment simply by encouraging the learner with easy reading and comprehension.

Adults who are learning a foreign language may want to consider reading children's books for the simple language. They can also try books on the subjects they know well or hobbies they enjoy. They will learn faster and have an enjoyable time due to their genuine interest.

About the Author
MARY J. ALLEN is director of the California state University Institute for Teaching and Learning and former director of the Faculty Teaching & Learning Center and Assessment Center at California State University, Bakersfield. She earned a master’s degree in statistics and a Ph.D. in psychology from the university of California, Berkeley, and she taught these subjects for over two decades before branching into faculty development and assessment. She serves as a thinking partner on educational effectiveness for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC); is Executive Editor of Exchanges, the California State University online journal on teaching and learning; and regularly presents workshops on assessment, including the AAHE/WASC collaborative workshop, Building Learner-Centered Institutions: Developing Institutional Strategies for Assessing & Improving Student Learning.

Solid handbook on assessment

This book covers all the fundamentals of program assessment, including philosophy, strategies, and all the possibilities and pitfalls when trying to close the program improvement cycle on college campuses. Recommended for any college faculty member, department or division chair, or administrator who wants an economical outline of what to do to put in place and document efforts to assess and/or improve program outcomes. Purchase a copy for your assessment folks, or for faculty who will lead in this important aspect of program improvement, or for accreditation reporting. Top quality manual.

I bought this book because our institution is working through it's IE documents and processes. If you don't know what "IE" stands for, count yourself fortunate to be outside the process! The book is helpful in that it provides a basic structure for understanding assessment, and encourages those planning assessment to build in consistency throughout the structure. This book is a solid primer for those entering the IE world.
