Damage on Pumps and Systems. The Handbook for the Operation of Centrifugal Pumps offers a combination of the theoretical basics and practical experience for the operation of circulation pumps in the engineering industry.

Centrifugal pumps and systems are extremely vulnerable to damage from a variety of causes, but the resulting breakdown can be prevented by ensuring that these pumps and systems are operated properly. This book provides a total overview of operating centrifugal pumps, including condition monitoring, preventive maintenance, life cycle costs, energy savings and economic aspects. Extra emphasis is given to the potential damage to these pumps and systems, and what can be done to prevent breakdown.

The author has decades of experience in flow and energy technology, including the research and development, design, planning and operation of circulation pumps and systems. For more than 12 years, he has been chief engineer at a pump technology company in Germany. His experience and solutions are summarized in this book.

About the Author
Thomas Merkle - M .Eng. Dipl.-Ing. (FH) - has some decades of experience as graduated engineer in the areas of flow technology and energy technology. His experience about pumps ranges from engineering and design up to planning and operation of pumps and pumping systems. He also obtained experience in the operation and maintenance of water pumps under extremely difficult conditions in remote regions.

Since more than 13 years he is working as Chief engineer for the company Schmalenberger in Tuebingen/Germany. In this function he is member of the research working group pumps & systems in the German association VDMA (German engineering association), and in the Network research & development of IHK Reutlingen (chamber of commerce and industry).

After his studies, which he finalized with two degrees - one in mechanical engineering and one after a post-graduate course in technical project management - he worked as project engineer, project manager and head of research & development, also overseas, on the topics of renewable energy, flow technology and energy efficiency for many years.

He searched at the center for solar energy and hydrogen research Baden-W�rttemberg (ZSW), Stuttgart, in the field of applied solar energy research. During this time, he held a part-time lectureship (1993-1997) as a lecturer at the University of Cooperative Education, Stuttgart, in the subject Renewable Energies.

He wrote many publications about pump technology, energy and renewable energy. A handbook for operation of pumps Schaeden an Pumpen und Pumpensystemen has been published by Expert Verlag Publishers.

In the context of his work at Schmalenberger, numerous investigations were carried out and solutions worked out to the pump wear topic.
He guided many research & development projects - supported by the BMWI (German ministry for economic.) and the BMBF (German ministry for research) - about pumps & systems.

Since 2011, he is part time lecturer in the field of pumps and systems at the Technical Academy Technische Akademie Esslingen.

Mele then attacks the thesis that backsliding is an illusion because people never freely act contrarily to what they judge is best. He argues that it is extremely plausible that if people ever act freely, they sometimes backslide. At the book's heart is the development of a theoretical and empirical framework that sheds light both on backsliding and on exercises of self-control that prevent it. Here, Mele draws on work in social and developmental psychology and in psychiatry to motivate a view of human behavior in which both backsliding and overcoming the temptation to backslide are explicable. He argues that backsliding is no illusion and our theories about the springs of action, the power of evaluative judgments, human agency, human rationality, practical reasoning, and motivation should accommodate backsliding.

About the Author

Alfred R. Mele is the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy at Florida State
University. He is the author of six previous OUP books: Irrationality (1987), Springs of Action (1992), Autonomous Agents (1995), Motivation and Agency (2003), Free Will and Luck (2006), and Effective Intentions (2009). He also is the editor of The Philosophy of Action (OUP 1997) and a coeditor of four other OUP volumes: Mental Causation (1993), The Oxford Handbook of Rationality (2004), Rationality and the Good (2007), and Free Will and Consciousness: How Might They Work? (2010).

An accessible account of Al Mele's writing on will-power over the last two decades.

It was good. If you are interested in academic work on weakness of will, you should read it.

Of special note is the shift from "strict akratic action" in Mele's seminal 1987 Irrationality and toward the slightly modified "core akratic (or weak-willed) action." Core akratic action includes the earlier "free intentional action against the agents own better judgment" but clarifies that the action be "sane," "based on practical reasoning," and that the agent be "non-depressed." Here Mele is both shoring up his position against criticism and positioning his view rhetorically as the central account.

Mele addresses the common language controversy between himself and Richard Holton. He is less than thorough about it and so the argument is only somewhat persuasive. But, the dispute made is clear.

The section on free-will is aimed at avoiding a full blown account of free action, but is still moderately technical. Not a good primer on free will, but a fair accounting of how to discuss weakness of will without such an account. Mele draws together lots of his previous work.

By far the most exciting element of the book is the chapter explaining "backsliding" or the process of failing to act on a reasoned judgment about what all things considered ought to be done. This section is a very helpful synthesis of Mele's previous work into a compelling account of practical rationality and failure.

Mele ends by discussing some of the results described in Baumeister's recent book Willpower.

All in all, this is a good book, well written and packed with connections between more tightly argued articles.

I was not disappointed but if you are looking for entertainment or diversion, you probably won't find it here!

This valuable and extensive study is not for everyone. I paid the comparably higher price for it because I am currently writing a novel set in ancient China and thought the information contained in it might be of value. I was not disappointed but if you are looking for entertainment or diversion, I do not believe that you will find much of that here; this is more of a scholarly work than a literary one and I regret that I chose to buy the Kindle and not the printed version.I have found Kindle books to be difficult to reference and annotate.

I gave this book four stars because of the valuable content that is very difficult to find anywhere else, at least in English.

The Revised Edition calls attention to general principles applicable to all vertebrate retinas, while showing how the visual needs of different animals are reflected in their retinal variations. It includes completely new chapters on color vision and retinal degenerations and genetics, as well as sections on retinal development and visual pigment biochemistry, and presents the latest knowledge and theories on how the retina is organized anatomically, physiologically, and pharmacologically.

This work is written from an African perspective e.g., "Alexander of Macedon (known in European history as Alexander the Great)" and is geared to secondary students (it comes complete with questions). It attempts to emphasize developments affecting the lives of "ordinary" people, from the beginning evolution of humankind up to the present, although post-independence Africa receives but 18 pages (and the bibliography lists only 30 items). Nevertheless, this is a good, well-written introductory text, although some might consider a number of its views, based as they are on the latest trends in scholarship, to be controversial (e.g., South African whites are referred to as "settlers"). Recommended.
