It is never too late to be creative and live your dreams

Pushing sixty and laid off from my last job of a decade made me put things into perspective. I started out at my last company (over a decade ago) able to be creative and resolve tense situations and technical snafus with total carte blanche. But due to several company merges, the last five years found my creativity shut down in lieu of taking direction (with no input allowed) for day to day operations. I turned my brain off and just waited as the layoffs got closer and closer to me. Now that I am free again, I found this book a great help in kick starting my brain. After reading it I decided I would take a "Roman Holiday" - just spend the summer doing what I want to do before I choose a "job" or "career" to go back to.

I am taking all sorts of classes - music, writing, painting, investing (so I do not waste any money and do not stress out about having the summer off), meditation, tai chi.

I read through this book once. Now I am taking a page a day, and journaling my own thoughts to what I have read. What I am finding out is that I am birthing a different person from a month ago, a year ago, a decade ago. And that new person will have something fun and wonderful to offer in the new work I choose that brings me joy.

I highly recommend this book if you feel your creativity has abandoned you. Your mojo has not left you - it is just waiting for you to awaken it from a long nap and for you to start playing together again.

This along with his others are short, insightful, and must haves in actual book form. The ability to have this and peruse through when ideas or insights just aren't coming is priceless. It helps jar your thought process and helps you too think. This is an invaluable little tool of a book you'll refer to for years. This is my second copy to replace my former.

not much in this book

Not what I expected, it is a small book (52 p), scales are not broken out into different melodic lines for practice or overlaid with suggested chord voicings, just straight notes from 1-8. Sorry I bought.

Something for every jazz musician (almost)

I bought this book as the text for a jazz improvisation course that I never got to take. Rather than return it, I decided to make the most of it that I could. Truth be told, I haven't gotten much out of it, because it really needs to have a course and/or music instructor to make this book go. My piano teacher and I have looked at it on occasion, and I will refer to it every once in a while when I have some difficulty with a certain key signature or to investigate what notes I should be using in a solo, but other than that, this spends a lot of time on my shelf and not on my piano's music stand. The subtitle of the book, "A practice method for all instruments", is a little misleading. The "method" actually consists of one whole page which says, basically, "Practice scales, with a metronome, over the entire instrument range, and break it up a little." Well, I don't know about saxophone, or bass, or whatever, but if you're playing piano and you're not playing scales daily already, well, good luck with that. (Drums? Sorry, no ideas here.) What is good about this book is that every conceivable scale is shown and explained in all twelve keys. Application, however, is left to the reader, which is why I think this book is only really useful in conjunction with someone teaching the concepts contained therein. To be sure, it would be great to be able to start plunking away when someone in the band calls out the name of a tune and then "E-flat, Locrian number 2", but nobody in any band I've ever played in ever did that. Still, this book is a great reference and an essential building block to learning jazz theory and playing great jazz music. (It's staple bound, so it lays flats on a music stand, which bumped it up to four stars in the listing title from its actual rating of three and a half stars.)

Easy reading

This book was great because it read like a novel. It contained a wealth of knowledge while being easily accessable. Two mistakes in the first couple of pages caused some hesitation in granting 5 stars.
P.29 refers to the "Norin Chunkin Bank" however there is no 'n' in the word "Chukin".
P. 40 refers to the "Sumitomo Mitsubishi Banking Corporation" however the bank resulting from the merger of Sumitomo and Sakura is "Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation"
