Easy, Enjoyable and Beautiful - Perfect for the Hopeless Romantic
By Todd Buster Paris
Conceptually, I LOVE the idea of this book. Pre-ordering it I had those butterflies in my stomach and couldn't wait to get it. It did NOT disappoint.

For tattoo fans, this book has some nice pictures and more importantly, very interesting stories about tattoos inspired by literature. For you fans of literary works, this will absolutely be thrilling, entertaining and fun to see ... well ... to see the words made flesh.

This is a great book for the hopeless romantic, the tattoo enthusiast, and/or for the literary buff - as well as anyone who enjoys asking the question, or giving the answer to: "nice tattoo, what's it mean to you? why'd you get it?"

If you're on the fence and wondering if you should buy it, let me point 3 things:
(1) For the price, it's an absolute no brainer. Buy it
(2) No matter what the price, it's a no brainer. Buy it.
(3) The reason that you're even considering buying this book is why you should buy this book.

Not enough tattoos
By Deborah Merritt
The literary world is vast. People with tattoos are extremely numerous. I was hoping this book would be a plethora of examples of how these two worlds collide. I was disappointed that it was so short and there weren't that many tattoo examples. I bought this as a Kindle book, which was fine for viewing the pictures. I suggest going to a book store and taking 5-10 minutes to go through the whole book and be done with it.

Beautiful cover, Wonderful concept
By Unole
I loved the idea of this book and the cover really sold me on purchasing this as a gift for a friend's birthday. While I have not read the book in it's entirety, I did flip through each page to see the tattoos. Each page layout is very unique but the quality of tattoos featured didn't really strike me as worthy of print. The visual artistry didn't exactly live up to the ideals behind the tattoo concepts to me but "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder" I guess.

Stranded in the African savanna, paleoanthropologist Ken Lauder encounters the inconceivable--a protohuman boy from a breed thought to have been extinct for two million years. From this irresistible "what if" premise, Popescu blends fascinating scientific speculation with scientific fact to explore the mysteries of how we become "human." 4 cassettes.

Amazon.com Review
In an unexplored Kenyan savanna, a paleoanthropologist finds a boy whose physical characteristics match those of the "missing link" and realizes that he's discovered a place that has escaped the normal evolutionary processes. Soon the modern world threatens to encroach on his bond with the boy as a poacher tracks them down and another anthropologist threatens to steal the discovery. Their only hope is to disappear into the forest with the boy's tribe.

From Library Journal
Ken Lauder has made one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time, but he may not live to announce it. On a remote Kenyan savanna and mountainside he has found evidence of existing protohumans, perhaps the long-sought "missing link" in humankind's evolutionary chain. But Kenya is in political turmoil and on the verge of civil war-which for Ken may be the least of his problems. He has been abandoned on the deadly savanna with neither supplies nor weapons and is pursued by murderous thugs who for unknown reasons already have attempted to kill him. Are they simply poachers into whose terrain he has intruded, or have they been sent by the government? Or have they been hired by a world-famous scientist with a reputation for appropriating what others have found first? Befriended by an eight-year-old boy of the protohuman tribe, Ken, if he is to survive, will have to live as one of them. A riveting thriller and an accessible crash course in paleoanthropology, this novel by the author of Amazon Beaming (LJ 8/91) also grapples with the fundamental question of what it means to be human. Highly recommended. [See the review of John Darnton's Neanderthal, p. 83, for another fictional account of the discovery of primitive folk surviving today.-Ed.]-Charles Michaud, Turner Free Library, Randolph, Mass.

From Booklist
What results from crossing Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World with Jane Goodall's chimpanzee observations? Monstrous popularity--or so the publisher is gambling, with a six-figure print run. A fantasy containing the collision of the present with the prehistoric, Popescu's tale justifies the risk. Popescu invents a plateau in East Africa frozen in evolutionary stasis. Wonder not how it remained undiscovered in an age of satellite surveillance: Popescu's protagonists, American Ken Lauder and Kenyan Ngili Ngiamena, suspend their disbelief, and we must follow. The two stumble upon the place in the course of excavating hominid fossils, one of which seems to be only 10,000 years old. Returning to Nairobi to figure out this problem, their activities attract the interest of various parties, most of them nefarious. The eminence grise of paleoanthropology, Cyril Anderson, resents the upstarts' intrusion into his bailiwick, while Ngili's family becomes embroiled in the underworld of Kenyan politics. These subplots percolate while Lauder goes back to the dig area to pursue his mounting suspicion that australopithecine still lives. Slowly revealing what Lauder discovers on the plateau, Popescu teases and pleases by stages in suspensefully dramatized, exhilarating speculations about the appearance and behavior of the protohumans. He builds to a crescendo when the subplotters finally converge on the plateau in a fiery, bullet-crossed conclusion. A wild encounter of human ancestors and descendants that will captivate legions. A good start
By A Customer
This is a promising work from someone new to the Anglo-Saxon literature. Petru Popescu is Romanian, and therefore his style and language are not as polished as expected from your average American author. His Latin lyricism translates oddly at times, and his descriptions are long and detailed. Character developing is uneven, but this is a minor sin compared to other aspects you will find worthwile.
Overall, it's a good book, and shows an great interest in social studies. This twist brings new life to an idea as old as Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lost World". Give it a chance - if you want more than other (similarly-priced) brainless slam-bang, you might like it.

I found this book on a clearance rack $3!I was on vacation and wanted a distraction,so I thought it was a good deal.Little did I know what Mr.Popescu had in store for me.This book is captivating for anyone with a love of mans early history. The sheer amount of research that he put into this novel must be applauded.I look forward to wraping myself up in his next novel.

An Unexpected Find
By A Customer
I bought this book two years ago at a "dollar store" during an ice storm which left us without electricity for two weeks. There wasn't much to do so I bought this book thinking it probably wouldn't be too great; I mean I spent three bucks on it at the dollar store. But, I hoped it would ward off the boredom. I didn't get to start reading it until a month ago and was I ever surprised. This is a great book! As the last reviewer stated, it's a great way to teach science through fiction. I had never put too much thought into how humans evolved. I have even found myself watching The Discovery Channel to find out more about the protohumans.

From the Back Cover
Sylvia Day draws us back into the shadows of a seductive underworld where lycans, vampires and angels vie for supremacy...

Elijah Reynolds is the most dominant of lycans, a rare Alpha whose skill on the hunt is surpassed only by his primal sexuality. When the lycans revolt due to the iron fist of angelic rule, he steps into command, becoming both enemy and coveted ally in the conflict between vampires and angels.

Vashti is the second most powerful vampire in the world, a lethal beauty with a path of devastation in her wake. Tasked with proposing an alliance between vampires and the lycans who killed her mate, Vash approaches Elijah, whose need to avenge a friend demands Vash's death even as his passion demands her surrender.

Soon, their enmity erodes beneath an all-consuming desire. Elijah has never encountered a woman whose warrior spirit and fierce sexual appetite rivals his own, while Vash is faced with the one man strong enough to be her equal. But as war looms, each must decide where their loyalty lies--with their own kind or with the enemy lover they can no longer live without.

Amazing & Riveting
By Melissa Phoenix
Oh wow! A Hunger So Wild is the second book in the Renegade Angel series. And it follows right from where the first book, A Touch of Crimson - Adrian & Lindsays' story, finishes at. This is Elijah & Vashti's story. If you havent read the first book, you must, because you're missing out on all the character & storyline developments to begin with.

A Hunger so Wild begins in the wake of the Lycan revolution and a viral outbreak among the vampire minions that puts the Sentinel (angels) in a vulnerable position. Their security has been breached leaving a series of betrayal among all 3 clans.

Syre, the leader of the Fallen (vampires) takes advantage of the sentinels vulnerability and sends Vashti, his second-in-command to conduct an allegiance with the Lycans. Despite her hatred for the 'dogs' she obeys her commander and meets with the Alpha of the Lycans, Elijah, whom she suspects is the murderer of her friend.

Elijah, the most dominant of lycans (and one of Adrians most loyal subjects), has been forced to take upon the position as the Alpha of the Lycans despite the consequences he may face from the sentinels.

Vashti, the second most powerful vampire surprisingly discovers that Elijah happens to be her equal that she never thought she would encounter after losing her mate in the past. Their sexual desires for each other soon develops much deeper than they thought that it conflicts with their loyalty for their own kind. Until they can no longer resist each other they have to come to an agreement that will keep them bound together forever.

This book had me hooked from page 1. There's so much more I want to say in this review but I dont want to spoil it for anyone. Im disappointed that it had to end. I just cant get enough of this series that I just want more more more!! And unfortunately I have to suffer and wait the many months for the 3rd book to come.

Sylvia is now officially my most favorite Author. Every single book I have read so far of hers (the crossfire novels as well) has had me in love with her writing.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone that loves paranormal books with HOT SEXY ALPHA HEROES & HEROINES.

The ultimate vampire villain Syre has become one of my favorite characters.

A Hunger So Wild by Sylvia Day
Paranormal Romance -July 3rd, 2012
4 1/2 stars

A Hunger So Wild is the second in the author's new Renegade Angels series. This book can easily be read by itself as the powerful second in command to the `evil' vampire population, named Vashti is severely tested.

Vashti is a fallen angel who was been punished by being transformed into a bloodsucking vampire. Although fallen, she was content, until the love of her life was killed by lycans. Since that time she has vowed to find his killers and exact her revenge. But without her love, Vashti's confidence has taken a toll. However, she hides this `weakness' behind a mask of cold efficiency for her leader Syre. But trouble brews when a mysterious deadly disease suddenly targets vampires. Unfortunately, the virus is spreading fast and they need help. Syre commands Vashti to seek out their old enemy the lycans. (Lycans were the loyal soldiers of angels sent to keep the vampires in check. But tired of being treated poorly, a large group rebelled and live on the edge of society.) For Syre realizes that the lycans may be open to mutual negotiation in their weakened state. Syre want Vashti to form an alliance to help battle the deadly virus and have added protection from the angels. Vashti grudgingly agrees only to meet with their leader, a reluctant alpha name Elijah.

Elijah has been trying to keep his splintered group alive and together. However, he quickly realizes that the vampires need his help and he isn't above using their desperation for his own needs. But when Vashti and Elijah meet they are stunned by their combustible attraction and the realization that Vashti killed Elijah's friend. They make a deal. Vashti's life for the name of the lycans who killed her lover. But all is not what is seems. And what happens when they uncover a plot that is meant to destroy both of their groups. Can they work together or will passion get in the way?

This book has a lot of attitude and is more thrilling than the first. The action starts immediately. In the first book, A Touch of Crimson, the heroine took a while to learn her abilities but Vashti is in her prime and not afraid to get a bit rough when needed. I was spellbound especially as the diabolical plot behind the death of Vashti's lover's was revealed. The ultimate vampire villain Syre has become one of my favorite characters. He is fascinating and even likeable as his motivations and histories are unveiled. The two main characters are kick a##! I particularly liked that Vashti and Elijah are confident in their powers and strong willed -a fantastic match! They definitely don't take any crap from anyone.

The past tension between the two fractions make for exciting reading. But what I loved was the sheer animal magnetism between the Elijah and Vashti. They literally can't keep themselves away from each other. I could feel their animosity but also the of control lust that burns between them. And the pages heat up as they search for the cure for the virus and try to find those responsible for the death of the Vashti's lover.

I highly recommend this spectacular paranormal read.

4.5 stars - Enemies to lovers go 'wild' with an almost feral attraction
By melindeeloo
In A Hunger So Wild "the enemy of my enemy" is not exactly a friend but an ally born of mutual necessity. The Fallen(vampire) and the Lycan have a good reason for distrusting each other, but with a common enemy and a dire situation for the Fallen, the two races team up and the Fallen's second, Vashti, becomes liaison to the Lycans, despite the fact the she hates 'dogs' for killing her mate and must deal directly with the Lycan's alpha, Elijah, who she's sworn to kill for a more recent crime. And Vashti is on Elijah's kill list as well for murdering his best friend, but they'll work together for now, kill each other when they're done, and lust with a wild feral hunger for each other in the meantime.

A Hunger So Wild was so good. There is a decent amount of touch up with the past leads, Lindsay and Adrian, from the first book A Touch of Crimson, since the background story involves a conspiracy that impacts all three of the groups with past and present angelic ties. And I liked that there is good amount of development of relationships beyond the romantic ones in the cast - Elijah's friendship with Lindsay, Fallen leader Sayre's with Vashti, and a newly developing connection between Sayre and the fledgling who formerly housed the soul of his nephalim daughter.

I also really liked the enemies to lovers romance between Vashti and Elijah. There's a intense, wild, and almost feral chemistry between these leads. However, with two strong and dangerous beings who value control in the mix and so many reasons why a relationship between them is wrong - personal baggage and tested loyalties both - the course of their relationship is far from smooth (and their physical connection starts off with a scene that transitions briefly into iffy consent. ) But the conflicted lustiness makes for some very steamy times between them and I liked the final resolution for the pair in which they make a place for their relationship in a world where their pairing doesn't fit nicely.

For those curious about whether author Day ties the two Renegade shorts into the main story line, both of the pairings from those stories (A Dark Kiss of Rapture and A Caress of Wings) are mentioned briefly, but Raze's looks to be still in progress. Oh and for fans of Day's Marked series (Eve of Destruction, Eve of Chaos, Eve of Darkness) - which shares the same world as this series - there is a brief cameo by Eve, that series' heroine which is fun, but not enough to really catch up with her.

So, I really liked this steamy and satisfying addition to Day's Renegade Angel series and am really curious about how the background plot is going to unfold and I am also really looking forward to seeing Sayre in the lead - Day did a really good job of whetting my appetite for more of his character

Earth: Evolution of a Habitable World, by Jonathan I. Lunine

Fully updated throughout, including revised illustrations and new images from NASA missions, this new edition provides an overview of Earth's history from a planetary science perspective for Earth science undergraduates. Earth's evolution is described in the context of what we know about other planets and the cosmos at large, from the origin of the cosmos to the processes that shape planetary environments and from the origins of life to the inner workings of cells. Astronomy, earth science, planetary science and astrobiology are integrated to give students the whole picture of how the Earth has come to its present state and an understanding of the relationship between key ideas in different fields. The book presents concepts in nontechnical language and mathematical treatments are avoided where possible. New end-of-chapter summaries and questions allow students to check their understanding and critical thinking is emphasized to encourage students to explore ideas scientifically for themselves.

Review
"The keenly awaited second edition of Lunine's book does not disappoint. The clarity of writing and level of scholarship remain high, and there is no other treatment of our planet with this interdisciplinary breadth. As we hone in on Earth-like worlds far from home, this book is a perfect component for an undergraduate astronomy or astrobiology course."
Chris Impey, University Distinguished Professor, University of Arizona

"Lunine focusses on the Earth as a system, and sets it in context in comparison with other Solar System bodies. This is how a geoscience text should be done these days."
David A. Rothery, The Open University

"Earth: Evolution of a Habitable World brings the knowledge gained by 50 years of Solar System exploration back to Earth and infuses the often hazy first half of Earth history with new energy and insight, providing a unique perspective on the entire history of our home planet."
James Head, Louis and Elizabeth Scherck Distinguished Professor of Geological Sciences, Brown University

"Lunine's astrobiological perspective on Earth history is a breath of fresh air, drawing on the entire breadth of science to address fundamental questions about the origins of life, and the development of the systems that sustain it here on Earth, in a manner that quickly and directly connects to students."
Marshall Bartlett, Chair of Physics, Hollins University

"... I've never seen anything quite like it ... This would be a spectacular text for a course providing a perspective on Earth and planetary science and modern issues in our stewardship of the Earth for students majoring in fields outside the geosciences ... It could even give geology students perspective on the 'deep time' that is beyond the vast majority of Earth's geologic record, and on Earth's place in the solar system ... Jonathan Lunine is a scientist who knows his planetary climates, having studied atmospheres of worlds inside and outside our solar system, and who has done lots of recent work on astrobiology."
Emily Lakdawalla, The Planetary Society (planetary.org)

"Earth: Evolution of a Habitable World succeeds remarkably in providing a well-balanced, enjoyable, and crystal clear summary of a broad set of topics that together introduce Earth and life in its complexity and interconnectedness. The book is rich in up-to-date research and it simultaneously provides a breadth and depth that are unmatched - students, interested laymen, and researchers will all enjoying reading it. What set[s] Lunine's text apart from the increasing number of great astrobiology books [is] the unmatched clarity of the text, its logical and well-balanced structure, and the surprising level of detail that the book succeeds in providing over the breadth of topics covered. Earth: Evolution of a Habitable World is an excellent book for geosciences, planetary sciences, and astrobiology - it is set to be a classic, like its first edition was."
Daniel Apai, Meteoritics and Planetary Science

"When this book arrived for review and I scanned the contents my first thought was, "This looks like a great asset to my current OU studies ..." and by and large I have to say it has been a good companion. ... well structured and easy enough to read ... I enjoyed this book ..."
David Swain, Open University Geological Society Journal

"Lunine always shows us the exact nature of the evidence that leads scientists to be able to piece together the jigsaw puzzle they are trying to solve. He does this with careful referencing and good use of figures, so that the interested reader will always know where to look up more information, or investigate the data more deeply themselves."
Vijay Tymms, New Directions

The evolution of our planet from a new perspective
By Philip Eklund (phileklund@aol.com)
Earth, Evolution of a Habitable World by Jonathan I. Lunine
Review by Philip Eklund
Dr. Lunine is a Professor of Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona, and a NASA advisor. His new book describes Earth's evolution in a fresh perspective, in relation to its sister planets, particularly Mars and Venus. This 319 page textbook covers Earth's origin, the development of its atmosphere and oceans, the variations of its orbit and climate, and at what point we are enmeshed in its long and lively history. The reader can see how we can be unwittingly in the teeth of an ice age and why the number of species has crescendoed now, in our time.
The vast territory that Lunine succinctly covers is all that anyone with a bit of gumption needs to become an authority on the state of our planet. Guideposts to this territory include the sciences of measurement (basically, math, the metric system, and dating methods), and of physics as applied to geology and biology (and some chemistry). Unfortunately Lunine sometimes lapses into off-topic diversions of astronomy (Doppler shifts, lunar phases, Stonehenge, eclipses, and aging planets by the density of their craters). Also, there is no glossary, but the index is adequate. (A few undefined jargons, like "cratonization", sneak in.)
The book is profusely illustrated by Jonathan's wife, Cynthia. There is a color section, mostly of refugees of some astronomy book showing various wonders of the universe. But one color map of the Southwest occupied my attention for a long time. It compares vegetation regimes during the Pleistocene and the Present, the ancient record being derived from pollen counts meticulously gleaned from old packrat middens. I amused myself by examining these data to see whether elephants could be reintroduced into Arizona. Another color figure shows fantastic computer sequences on how the moon must have been formed by an impact between Earth and a Mars-sized billiard ball.
The description of the origin of life is a gem. Lunine's compelling prose springs out as lively as the quasi-stable whirlpools of life he describes (basically an autocatalysis model describing a mode of life existing before reproduction). An alternative model depicting an RNA origin of life is provided mainly for comic relief. Although the role of biology in forming Earth's almost explosive atmosphere covers several subsequent chapters, life is depicted as along for the ride, and the Gaia "biofeedback" theory is dismissed in a sentence.
Unfortunately, the origin of sentience, an event indisputably more profound than the origin of life, is not mentioned. However, the fossil evolution rise of humanity, particularly the Neanderthals, is wonderfully covered. Lunine mentions the "blitzkrieg" theory of his neighbor, Dr. Paul Martin, who postulates the extinction of American megafauna, such as the great elephants and saber-tooths, as being the result of the invasion of "native" Americans with spears. A nice contrast to the increase in American bio-diversity that accompanied the post-Columbian invasion of technologically advanced humans.
Lunine was identified by Time magazine as one of its 1994 "50 for the Future" list of emerging American leaders. Lunine himself would prefer the term "policy-maker" to leader, in the sense of presenting knowledge that self-led individuals can organize into principles of purposeful and long range action. The power of a comprehensive book such as this is that current issues such as global warming can be put in the perspective of past "atmosphere crises" of Earth, such as the super-high greenhouse prevailing at the end of the dinosaur era.
The penultimate chapter, titled "Limited Resources" fails this potential, being anecdotal without the factual rigor of the preceding chapters. (I was told that this chapter was written at the last minute at the request of the publisher.) Lunine starts by treating limited resources and overpopulation as arbitrary assertions, in defiance of his tradition of listing the assumptions of every dating method or limitations of climate modeling.
On the plus side, Lunine does take a rational stand against the Luddites. But where are the charts on air pollution, famine frequencies, human fertility, wetland or forest land acreage, etc. over time? The charts that do appear, on projections of population, energy use, kilos of grain per person, and "undiscovered" oil, have none of the error bars, validation, or context of previous chapters. Bemoaning the tiny amount of land urbanized each year to support farmers moving to the cities as a result of a world-wide food glut is an example of the surreal non-sequitor grab-bag of alarmist insinuations of which fill this chapter.
Particularly nasty is the bromide that less industrialized nations need a "reasonable" standard of living, with the implication that the U.S., (which creates most of the resources that feed and run the world), somehow deprives them of this even as the U.S. demonstrates the technological and political blueprints on how to achieve abundance. Since humans are too greedy or stupid to be allowed the freedom to despoil their own nest, only coercive regulation, or supra-governmental "cooperation" is required to tell their citizenry what is in their own best interests at gun-point. The nadir of these politics is an inexcusable sanction of coercive sterilization in China.
Other than the coverage of our most recent millennium, Lunine has written a tightly integrated and ambitious book. Particularly evocative is the imagery of the continents, floating and jostled into each other like froth on the churning oceanic plates of the Earth, teeming with a surprisingly robust and assertive biological component, laughing yet seesawing through cosmic disasters, extinctions, and self-induced crises of a scale that reduces the palimpsest of human intervention to ripples from a plunked stone.
This beautiful and vigorous accomplishment surmounts what has heretofore been a dry subject, and it literally groundbreaks the placement of our planet and ourselves in the objective context of existence and history.

perfect book for reference
By Michael G McGauley
If you're looking for a book that is a great read and even a better reference book about the geosciences, this is the one. I refer to it often in my scientific education. The references at the end of each chapter are also a great way for people to get further information on each subject, if they need it.

Very informative
By H. Baki Iz
I used the book for a book report in teaching. It nicely complemented the topics covered in the syllabus. Occasionally narrative becomes boring with emphasis on astrophysics. Nonetheless, the content clearly reflects the author's deeper understanding of the topics in a unifying scheme.
