Thanks in part to the Dead Sea Scrolls and other intertestamental writings that have been published in the last twenty years, there has been a marked increase in scholarly interest in Jewish messianism and how it relates to Jesus and the early church s understanding of Christology. Older assumptions about the nature of the Messiah and what he was expected to accomplish have been called into question. The entire topic is under review, new questions are being asked, and the messianism of Jesus of Nazareth is open to new interpretation.
