A good start but more thorough works now exist

The question of whether or not Mussolini sought to rebuild the Roman Empire during his reign has never been truly answered and this book does not seek to do so. While mistitled the book does offer a very good account and narrative of Mussolini's tenure in office. It is a basic overview of foreign policy and how the world viewed Italy during his reign. Dennis Mack Smith is an excellent historian and his biography of Mussolini is among the best that can be found although it is written more than a decade after this book. This is a great start to understanding what occurred via Italy during the World War II era. The book goes beyond a simple biography of Mussolini and does try to take in a snapshot of Italy as a whole. It is a decent place to start for a narrative but this should not be taken as the complete picture. RJ Bosworth's newest book Mussolini's Italy is a great source for what occurred in Italy both domestically and from a foreign policy perspective. While this book was great at the time it was published one can probably find more complete references elsewhere. The information here is still mostly good and has been challenged in some ways but it can be an excellent start to understanding Italy in World War II.

Facism- Glory and Shame

Provides not only a well-studied insight into Mussolini's life, but also the positive (with regards to the nationalistic goals) projects and the horrible mistakes and ultimate destruction of his "New Roman Empire." Included are the uses of propaganda, social control, and unreasonable expectations by the dictator. Sad that it's out of print now, but used copies can always be found.

Mussolini's Dream

This now surpassed book details Mussolini's tenure in office with particular focus on foreign policy and military strategy. The clear theme is that Facism was doomed to fail from the start. An indecisive, ill-informed, and arrogant Mussolini sought to mislead both his countrymen and the world into believing that Italy was a strong nation, poised and destined to rebuild a Mediterranean empire. The Facist myth was built on propaganda and bluster. When war came, Italy was an unwanted ally with worthless materiel and untrained troops. Mussolini was executed before his failures could be fully borne out.
This book was published in 1976, so the historical record has been more fully explored over the last 35 years. The book is repetitive at times and could have been much shorter than 250 pages. I suggest reading Mack Smith's later written biography of Mussolini over "Mussolini's Roman Empire."
