Poetry. Diana Anhalt's newest collection, BECAUSE THERE IS NO RETURN, is the reminiscence of her life in Mexico after fleeing the U.S. with her parents during the McCarthy Era. After nearly sixty years Diana returned to the US, only to find that it was no longer her home. She has since cataloged the things you can't take back in a carry- on—the bougainvillea, taxicab rosaries, wet season rainbows—and laments them all here. About the Author
Diana Anhalt's poetry has appeared in a wide variety of publications including Nimrod Journal, The Atlanta Review, Sow's Ear, and Comstock Review. Her essays, short stories and book reviews have been published in both English and Spanish. She is the author of three chapbooks, Shiny Objects (Estampa Artes Graficas), Second Skin (Future Cycle Press) and Lives of Straw (Finishing Line Press), and two books, A Gathering of Fugitives (Archer Books) and BECAUSE THERE IS NO RETURN (Passager Books, 2015). In 2010, Diana returned to the US after almost sixty years as a resident in Mexico, to be closer to her family. She now resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

Blended in with some great wit are startling lines

The opening poem comes crashing onto the first page trlling of the traumatic transition from the Brox to Mexico City. No simple travelogue, this succinctly told transition to another world includes the reader. Photographs could not tell the poet's story as vividly --- we are not just reading about her experience --- we are there! Blended in with some great wit are startling lines, such as "Your silence strings barbed wire across the table." The admonition of her mother that "chewing on pencils gives: pencilitis." and grandmother's warning against "spreading good news" embraces a colorful family dynamic. "The Mover" provides helpful understanding of the deep loneliness for what one has left behind in seeking new experience. We cannot arrive somewhere, without leaving somewhere. In "Dress Rehearsal" we encounter the chilling but tender preparations for when "I won't be here to care for you." I was genuinely startled and disappointed when I came to the end. These poems merit multiple reading, not to seek to understand, but to relish the gift of Anhalt's insight and heart.

to an alien culture that becomes greater than the home that has been lost; it becomes a gift.

A Triumph!

This is a book not only for those people who, on hearing the word "poetry," dive into the nearest shelter with plugged ears, but also for those who value humor, color, the taste and aromas of language, the vitality of authentic experience. In other words, it serves as an antidote to the mindless, trivial and cheap plastic drivel that infects so much of contemporary American life. Always accessible, this is the testament of a woman who has never fallen out of love with Mexico, her home for sixty years. On the contrary, since moving to Atlanta a few years ago to be closer to family, that passion has burned all the brighter with poignancy and gusto. Like Balzac, she is a chronicler, and it is impossible not to be entranced, entertained and seduced by the atmospheres she presents and the characters who inhabit them: her parents, driving instructor, tour guides, mummies and others. But as endearing as these are, it is Mexico itself who reigns as the most impactful persona, at once bewildering and bewitching. The sprinkling of Spanish words and Nahuatl Indian place names lend just the right spice, a flavorful zing that conjures one of the world's great cuisines. If I were to take ten poems to a desert island I would have to include "To the Mover," if only to remind myself in my enforced solitude that somewhere out there a person like Diana exists whose vibrant embrace of life, once encountered, leaves one forever changed.
