Praise for Patrick Logan

Great follow up to the eerie horror book "Skin". Mr. Logan is a fantastic new author and a breath of fresh air to thr horror genre. I recommend reading Skin first, that book is in my top 5 all-time horror books. Crackers picks up not long after and is a worthy sequel.

Short but good

First half was about 3 men and sons plus a friend camping and fishing. It was interesting but really picked up the second half. The boys left after dark to explore and get scared. What they found and happened was not what they wanted. Read Skin first.

Insatiable for Logan's writing

That said... this one is just... either a little too short for a book or too long for a short story/novella. I would have LOVED to see this as the first part of Flesh and made that a longer book, rather than this one stand alone and felt that huge disappointment at the end of ...awwww, that's it????

Minor quibbles about Kent being too good a boy and Tyler being too bad and getting just what he deserved. Would have almost liked to see it reversed: maybe having Kent being cracked and Tyler running for help and dealing with the angst of that. We also never learn just WHY Kent doesn't like Tyler (just because he's a jerk?). Braid is stereotypically the kid to Be Picked On and the other boys are too much there to be window dressing. And would the fathers REALLY leave a bunch of kids alone for the day while THEY go fishing?
Quibbles over. But maybe getting deeper into some of that would have made this a deeper book and not a novella to bridge the two books together. The second book of a trilogy is always the hardest to keep from ending up as an "explanation for being" for the other two, so I get that.
That all said? Cracker-critters are scary and this story is why you ALWAYS check your batteries in your flashlight. Never a bad idea to have a backup flashlight with you. Or two. Just sayin'....
